This year’s E-Gré Competition gala concert will include internationally-acclaimed concert pianists Douglas Finch and Jon Kimura Parker.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.

A native Winnipegger, Douglas Finch is a pianist and composer known for having revived the lost art of classical improvisation in concert. Douglas was the second prize winner in the first E-Gré Competition. For the last twenty years, he’s been living in London, UK, where he is a professor at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance.

Jon Kimura (Jackie) Parker has given recitals and performed with major orchestras across the country and around the world. He has given command performances for Queen Elizabeth II, the United States Supreme Court, and the Prime Ministers of Canada and Japan. A versatile performer, he has also jammed with Doc Severinsen and Bobby McFerrin and collaborated with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. In 1978, he won first prize in the E-Gré Competition, and in 1999 he was awarded the Order of Canada. Originally from Vancouver, Jon Kimura Parker is a professor at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston, Texas. Mr. Parker will be performing Piano Sonata No. 3 in A minor by Sergei Prokofiev, as well as The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky and arranged by Jon Kimura Parker.

Douglas Finch will be performing the Manitoba premiere of a piece called “15″ by Howard Bashaw, as well as a piece of his own entitled Preludes and Afterthoughts: Fantasy-Transcriptions on Chopin’s Preludes op. 28. Douglas will finish his portion of the concert by improvising on themes from the audience. Please email suggestions to eckhardt@brandonu.ca or submit them in person no less than 40 minutes before the concert. Douglas is looking for any of the following: the title of a song or jingle, a non-musical thematic suggestion or a musical them.

CDs and scores will be for sale at the door.

The Westman GIS Users’ Group (WGUG) is holding its annual meeting Friday, March 22 at Brandon University.

Geography professor Dr. Dion Wiseman says participants come from across the province and North Dakota, including municipal governments, Parks Canada, Agriculture Canada, conservation districts, Ducks Unlimited and Manitoba Hydro.

“GIS allows us to visualize and interpret data to uncover patterns, trends and relationships,” says Dr. Wiseman, who organized the first WGUG annual conference in 2002 in partnership with Assiniboine Community College. “School kids in Grades 5 and 7 are using GIS as part of the provincial curriculum, to learn about population growth and animal migration.”

Dr. Wiseman says the conference is a great opportunity to meet GIS users, educators and vendors; see software demonstrations and project presentations; and take part in GIS discussions.
