Personal Webspace at BU

Setting up your user account to host files

Staff members are given the ability to allocate some of their personal storage space (N:) for a personal webspace.

This has many beneficial uses, but perhaps one of its best features is that it will allow you to transfer files to colleagues which are larger than e-mails permit for attachments.

Remember: you can always use your shared drive on T: to share documents within your department.

Note: The following steps can be done through Netstorage instead (if you didn’t want to login to Novell, or if you were away from your office.)

Here are the basic steps:

1. To begin go to your N: by logging into Novell and then opening “My Computer” If you don’t see N: listed then you may need to Logon to Novell.

2. Create a New Folder and name it public.www

3. Open the public.www folder.

    • Any file you place here will be accessible from the internet as part of your website.
    • If you want, you can create an index.html file to use the space as a typical website.
    • If you don’t place an index.html file there, your site will still function. It will simply say Forbidden if someone browses to your webspace.

4. Your webspace is accessible on the internet though http://www.novell.brandonu.ca/~yourusername/
(you need to replace where it says “yourusername” with your own novell username and don’t forget the ~ symbol in front of it.)
5. To share a file with someone you need to send them the exact link to the file you wanted to share. eg. If you placed a file named Word1.doc into your public.www folder then you would need to send them your website address followed by Word1.doc. Here is the demonstration using our helpdesk webspace. http://www.novell.brandonu.ca/%7Ehelpdesk/Word1.doc
