John E. Robbins Library
Welcome to the John E. Robbins Library (www.brandonu.ca/library)
Located in the George T. Richardson Centre, with a second entrance from the Queen Elizabeth II Music Building, the John E. Robbins Library holds books, journals, microforms, electronic journals, books and databases, as well as audio and video recordings. It is a selective depository for Canadian government publications and a full depository for Manitoba government publications. The collections are intended primarily to support Brandon University’s diverse curriculum.
Highlights of the John E. Robbins Library collections feature an extensive Indigenous Literature collection, as well as a comprehensive Music section. The library is a member of the Canadian Research Knowledge Network, which provides access to thousands of electronic journals.
Reference services, technical support, and bibliographic instruction are provided through the Information Commons, which is open so long as the library is open.
The library building is also home to Brandon University’s Information Technology Services department and the S. J. McKee Archives.

Library Cards
The library registration process may be completed at the Circulation Desk in either the Main or Music Libraries. You are responsible for every item signed out on your account. A COPPUL borrowing card is available from our librarians for BU Faculty visiting other Canadian University libraries. For more information on COPPUL cards visit: http://www2.brandonu.ca/library/coppulcards.html
Interlibrary Loans
If you require material that is unavailable at Brandon University, Interlibrary Loan services are available to currently registered faculty, staff, and students at no charge. You may place a request through the ILL link on the Library homepage or through links from the various databases.
Course Reserve Lists
Your course reserve list may include library materials, personal copies, photocopies, or Reference items for a loan period you specify. To initiate a reserve list please complete an online Reserve form. Please contact Donna Lowe (Music, ext.630) with any reserve-specific questions.
Photocopying
Most campus departments keep a photocopy card on file at the Circulation Desk for use by faculty. If you wish to bill copies to your department, you may sign out your department’s photocopy card from either Circulation Desk.
Library Instruction
The library provides tours and bibliographic instruction sessions, which can be arranged by contacting our Reference Librarian, Rainer Schira (ext.463). Instruction sessions include effective search strategies for the online catalogue, any number of databases, and the Internet. The evaluation of sources for academic merit is also covered.
The library also has audiovisual tutorials for electronic resources. See the library’s “Need Help?” page: http://www2.brandonu.ca/library/infoservices.html
Off Campus Access to Electronic Resources
If you are accessing the library’s web site from off campus, most links on the library’s web site will first take you to the Proxy Authentication Page, where you can log in with their Brandon University username and password. Once you have logged in, you will be taken to the destination of the link. You should only have to log in once per session.
To log in, you will need your Brandon University username and password – the same username and password you use to log into the Brandon University network when you’re on campus. If you have not claimed your username and password or you are having trouble logging in with those, you should contact the Information Commons Desk (Phone 571-8500).
Ordering Library Materials
Each department has a budget to purchase relevant materials for the Library. A request to purchase materials is initiated by a faculty member, who sends the order to the Acquisitions Department (except for the Music and Education Faculties, in which case the orders go to their Faculty Library Committees).
Orders may be submitted in various forms:
Please provide as much information about the item as possible and be clear about the format (i.e. Video or DVD, Score or CD).
