4.4 Liquor Policy

Only bona fide university groups may hold functions at which liquor is consumed under the University's liquor licenses. A bona fide university group is a student group or the staff or faculty of an academic or administrative area that is registered with the Office of the Dean of Student

Services

Food Services staff must be retained for all events on campus at which liquor is served as they will have completed a training program that teaches techniques which help the server exercise a positive influence on the drinking behavior of patrons. Food Services will assume complete responsibility for the purchase, administration, and return of the liquor at the approved event.

Event organizers will be expected to adhere to the provisions of the Manitoba Liquor Control Act.

Abuse of the privilege of holding events on campus at which liquor is served will result in the suspension of the privilege.

In addition, Brandon University forbids the use of the University's name in advertising events held off-campus at which liquor is to be served unless approval for the use of the name of Brandon University is obtained in writing from the Office of the Dean of Student Services.

The Office of the Dean of Student Services will approve an event on the understanding that all of the following conditions shall be met:

  1. Advertising for the event shall be within the bounds of good taste and shall not appear to promote the excessive use of alcohol.
  2. No one who is visibly intoxicated shall be admitted to the event.
  3. Underage patrons shall be clearly identified and shall not be served alcohol.
  4. Alcohol shall be served only by bartenders who have successfully completed a training program in techniques for intervening with intoxicated customers.
  5. No alcohol shall be served to anyone who is visibly intoxicated.
  6. All reasonable efforts shall be made to prevent patrons of the event who become intoxicated from placing themselves or others at risk.

This policy does not apply to off-campus groups which contract for space or services through Ancillary Services at Brandon University nor does it apply to facilities under the jurisdiction of the Knowles-Douglas Students Union Centre Inc.
