Safety and Health Policy
Summary
The purpose of this policy is to ensure there is a safe and healthy environment for all faculty, staff, students and visitors in which to work, study and participate in educational, social and recreational activities on campus.
The policy and procedures outlined herein apply to all members of the University community, including University employees, students, and visitors.
Responsibility
The Vice-President (Administration & Finance) shall assume overall responsibility for the communication, administration and interpretation of this policy.
Policy
The health and safety of all members of the University community is of paramount importance to the University. Therefore, the University shall:

Ensure compliance with all Federal, Provincial and Municipal regulations, codes and statutes pertaining to safety and health in the workplace;

Support the formation and implementation of ongoing effective safety and health programs appropriate to the daily operations of the University;
-
Support the operation of a joint management/employee Workplace Safety and Health Committee;
-
Give priority to a safe work environment in the planning, direction and implementation of University activities; and
-
Support the operation of the University Safety and Health Office.
Procedures

The President and Vice-Presidents of the University shall:

Provide the support and organizational leadership necessary to implement and administer this policy and all relevant Federal, Provincial and Municipal regulations, codes and statutes within the University; and
-
Incorporate into operational planning and budgeting the necessary resources for the provision of safety and health programming and a safe working environment.

Deans, Department Chairs, Directors and Managers of administrative units of the University shall:

Provide the managerial support necessary to implement this policy within their respective areas of responsibility;

Incorporate into operational policies, procedures, programs and projects adequate provisions for safe working conditions and practices;

Monitor and evaluate safety within their respective areas of responsibility and recommend measures to improve conditions; and
-
Be familiar with the contents of the Brandon University Emergency Procedures Manual.

Laboratory Instructors and supervisory staff shall:
-
Ensure that students and student demonstrators are given adequate direction, training and instruction in the respective areas of their responsibility so as to enable the safe performance of their study/work without undue risk;

Ensure that all accidents and near accidents are reported to the University Safety and Health Office for such investigation as required, and that action is taken to prevent a recurrence; and
-
Be familiar with the contents of the Brandon University Emergency Procedures Manual.
