Auditions

The audition repertoire should normally consist of three selections, contrasting as to historical period and style.

All applicants except pianists, guitarists, and percussionists should perform with piano accompaniment. If an accompanist is required, one will be provided for a fee, payable on the day of the audition. Piano scores should be sent directly to the School of Music and must be received at least two weeks before the audition.

For students applying for admission in September 2012, audition dates have been arranged as follows:

  • October 27 and 28, 2011
  • February 16, 2012
  • March 22, 2012
  • April 24 and 25, 2012
  • May 11 and 12, 2012

At this audition, students will also be given an ear test. Aural skills to be tested will include the ability to sing a note after hearing it played on the piano; to identify (or sing) intervals; to sing up and down major and minor scales or to identify notes from within such scales; to clap back a rhythm after it has been clapped twice; and to play back or sing a short melodic phrase after it has been played twice.

Although live auditions are preferable, recorded auditions are accepted where the costs and inconvenience of travel to Brandon present serious problems. In these cases, corroborative evidence of performance ability and of the authenticity of the recorded performance is required. Recorded auditions should be received no later than May 1. The Entrance Audition Form must be returned to the School of Music at least four weeks before the audition date.
