Percussionist Victoria Sparks was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba. She has studied music since the age of five, learning piano from her Gramma Sparks. After a brief stint on trumpet young Victoria asked her band director if she could play xylophone, gradually expanding from there to the full gamut of what it means to be a percussionist. Her teachers have included Rob Gardner, Jauvon Gilliam and Jon Crabiel and she has received instruction from Craig Hentrick, Julie Spencer, Johnny Lee Lane, Tim Adams, Jack Van Geem, Paul Yancich and Christopher McLaurin. Victoria was a Laureate of the 2005 National finals of the Canadian Music Competition, performs regularly with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Winnipeg Chamber Orchestra & Royal Winnipeg Ballet. She loves performing works by living composers, collaborating with professional and student composers in concert, conference, workshop, and gallery settings, most recently working with the Pressure Wave Festival as part of the Groundswell Series. She has been an active music educator throughout Winnipeg and Indianapolis and has recently been appointed the Coordinator of Percussion Studies at Brandon University.
