Gretta Sayers

B.A. (Honours Music Theory and Music History) University of Regina, 2003

M.A. (Music Theory) University of Western Ontario, 2010

Gretta Sayers studied music theory and music history at the University of Regina before moving to Brandon, where she began teaching at the School of Music in 2005. She is pleased to return to Brandon University after completing a master’s degree in music theory at the University of Western Ontario.  In her theory classes, Gretta helps students apply theoretical knowledge to their practical studies in order to encourage a holistic understanding of the repertoire they are studying.  She has taught university courses in theory, history, and keyboard harmony, and conservatory music courses in theory, history, harmony, counterpoint and analysis.

Gretta’s current research interests include history of theory—particularly theorists and treatises from the nineteenth century, the relationship between music theory and analysis in both tonal and post-tonal music, the development and analysis of form in Western music, and the social and cultural influences that shape these developments.

In addition to her university degrees, Gretta has also attained upper level RCM certificates in piano, theory, history and voice.  She is a member of the Society of Music Theory and the Canadian University Music Society.
