Dame Evelyn Glennie has a successful career as a solo percussionist, a rarity in classical music. She performs around the globe with countless ensembles and a variety of artists, and has commissioned 160 new works for solo percussion. Washington-based conductor Anne Manson first led the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra in 2006 and after many guest appearances, she was appointed the group’s artistic director and principal conductor in 2008.

Concert has been cancelled. Born in the Soviet Union, Faina Lushtak is a graduate of the Stolyarskii Special Music School for Musically Gifted Children as well as from the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where she earned degrees in piano performance and composition. Her playing has been lauded for its “clarity of line and transparency of texture” (New York Times), “ her technique is sure and ample, her tone varies from a beautiful, singing lyricism to a more matter-of-fact solidity” (Times Picayune, New Orleans) and “her style is very brilliant, very romantic, very colorful and stylish.” (The Ledger)

The 2009 winner of the annual Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition, violinist Carissa Klopoushak hails from Saskatchewan. Presently, she is a student of Jonathan Crow and is pursuing a Doctorate in Violin Performance at McGill University. She is a member of the Schulich String Quartet, has played with the National Arts Centre Orchestra and performed Schönberg’s Gurrelieder in a collaboration between the McGill and Montreal Symphony Orchestras. This recital is one of several in a cross-country tour – one of the competition’s prizes – upon which she embarks this fall.

The newest member of the School of Music’s jazz department – Eric Platz – will be introduced to the public in this performance. He formerly taught at post-secondary institutions and performed in Boston and the surrounding area. He joins Greg Gatien, who helped develop the jazz program here, and fellow faculty member Michael Cain, who first performed in the pro series three years ago.

A pianist since early childhood, Kyung Kim earned a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has won countless awards in her native Korea and in the United States, where she lived for several years. A concerto soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician, she has performed in North America as well as parts of Europe and Asia. She now makes her home in Brandon and is a faculty member of the School of Music.

Professor Emeritus and former School of Music Dean, Lawrence Jones maintains a teaching studio and continues to perform. His daughter, Laura Jones lends her talents to groups like the Phoenix Quartet, the Thames Quartet, the Clearly Classic Ensemble, the Olympia Trio and Mannheim Virtuosi. In 2005, Lawrence and Laura Jones recorded a CD of French music for cello and piano entitled “ Sérénade française.”

Programme: The Schumann Letters

Forbidden love inspired German composer Robert Schumann and Clara Wieck to exchange more than 20,000 letters during their courtship. This performance weaves the words and music created by this musical couple. Susan Gilmour Bailey grew up in Manitoba and is now a busy vocalist in Europe, North America and the United Kingdom, where she now lives. Colin Fox is a renowned Canadian stage, film and television actor.

Since his last appearance in Brandon, violin sensation James Ehnes won his sixth Juno award and a Grammy, and has added to his more than 20 recordings. He performs not only throughout North America, but also in Australia, Europe and Asia. He has been the School of Music’s Francis Chaplin Guest Professor of Violin since 2005. Pianist Michael Kim is the School of Music’s current Dean. Previously, he taught at Lawrence University in Appleton, WI, where he was Professor of Piano and Chair of the Keyboard Department. A busy recitalist and chamber musician, he frequently collaborates with his wife, pianist Kyung Kim, and sister, violinist Helen Kim.

Returning to the Lorne Watson Recital Hall stage, the Brandon New Music Festival is a three-day event celebrating contemporary and newly composed works. This season’s theme is sound, sight and words. The Wednesday and Thursday performances feature a student ensemble, led by Megumi Masaki, devoted to exploring the wide range of new works available today.

Now a School of Music faculty member, Catherine Wood has performed throughout North America and in France. A former instructor at Appalachian State University in North Carolina and other schools, she has participated in many summer festivals. Also a faculty member, Leanne Zacharias has collaborated with artists in various disciplines and with ensembles like the Houston Symphony Orchestra and Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra. A former artist-in-residence at the Banff Centre, she has performed with the Miró Quartet, Edgar Meyer, the Weakerthans, to name a few.

Jeffrey Wood

A staunch proponent of contemporary music, Jeffrey Wood earned a Master of Music in piano and a Doctorate in composition at State University of New York at Stony Brook. He has dubbed this recital “In the Shadow of War: Currents in 20th Century Music, 1910-1950”. His idea is to present music that was written within the context of the world at war.
