Recital Procedures for Graduate Music Students

All Performance and Literature students are required to complete at least one recital as part of their degree.  The following procedures and guidelines have been established by the Graduate Music Department.

Repertoire and Jury Approval: Repertoire and performance time will normally be recommended by the applied instructor, but must ultimately be approved by the Graduate Music Department. Students will submit their proposed repertoire and list of jurors (with signatures), on the appropriate form, to the Music Office no fewer than 5 weeks before the proposed recital date. The form is available below.

The applied instructor will suggest jurors (three are required, normally including the applied instructor). The student will then approach the proposed jurors and obtain their agreement and signatures on the form (see above), which is then submitted to the Music Office.

Booking the Hall: The student must check the availability of the Lorne Watson Recital Hall and complete the Internal Booking Form. The form must be emailed to music@brandonu.ca at least 2 weeks prior to the recital.

65:613 Recital I

Recital Length: Performance time will be recommended by the applied instructor, but must ultimately be approved by the Graduate Music Department. For instrumentalists the normal length will be approximately 50-60 minutes. For students in the conducting and composition streams, the suggested length is approximately 30 minutes.

Program Notes will have an approximate length of 1,000 words and will be submitted for approval (to a faculty member approved by the student’s applied instructor) no less than one month prior to the recital date. Where appropriate, program notes should include footnotes and bibliographic information. Students are referred to the “Preparation Guide for Program Notes” available below.

Collaborative Pianists are required to include a solo work or group of works in their program.

65:614 Public Recital II

This requirement is for students in the jazz and composition streams. Suggested duration is 15-20 minutes.

65:616 Concerto or Major Chamber Work

This requirement is for students in the piano, collaborative piano, string and clarinet streams.

Repertoire Guidelines:

The Graduate Music Department will take into consideration both duration and technical difficulty of the proposed repertoire when considering proposals for this recital.

The normal minimum duration requirement for classical and romantic repertoire is 20 minutes.

“Concerto” is understood to include any work scored for solo instrument and orchestra.

“Major Chamber Work” is understood to include groupings of a trio or larger.

Collaborative Pianists are required to choose a “Major Chamber Work” for this program.

Recital Program:

Recital repertoire and program notes (for 65:613 only) must be submitted to the Music Office no later than 7 days prior to the recital date. The student will provide “program-ready” copy using the template available below.

Recording and Stage Assistant:

Arrangements for a concert assistant and for recording must be made in advance, in accordance with Lorne Watson Recital Hall booking policy.
