Outstanding Scholar Joins University as Dean

BRANDON, MB – A passionate writer, consummate educator and lifelong soccer devotee is joining Brandon University (BU) as the new Dean of Arts.

Dr. Demetrios Tryphonopoulos, incoming Dean of Arts, Brandon University (web)Dr. Demetrios Tryphonopoulos is currently Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies and Professor of English at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), the oldest English language university in Canada and one of the oldest public universities in North America. He holds a PhD in English from the University of Western Ontario and has written, edited or co-edited 12 books, including globally-acclaimed works on the controversial American poet Ezra Pound.

“I believe in BU’s institutional vision, the health of its programs, and the certainty of its future accomplishments,” says Dr. Tryphonopoulos. “I am very excited and honoured to be afforded the opportunity to be part of the BU community, and to work collaboratively and imaginatively with all of the University’s stakeholders, including alumni, students, faculty members and colleagues, staff, senior administrators, local and provincial governments, and the wider community.”

In addition to extensive teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels, Dr. Tryphonopoulos is well-versed in university governance, serving on the UNB Board of Governors Executive Committee, International Advisory Committee, and Faculty of Arts Curriculum Committee. Active in the Canadian and NB Soccer Associations, he has coached both the UNB Men’s and Women’s varsity teams.

“Demetrios has an outstanding teaching and research record, and extensive university service experience,” says Dr. Gervan Fearon, BU Vice-President (Academic and Provost). “Our faculty members and students expressed their strong support for him to join the University, and it is wonderful that he will play a role as we continue building capacity and strength in the Faculty of Arts and the University.”

Dr. Tryphonopoulos starts his five-year term as Dean of Arts on January 1, 2015. The Board of Governors has also appointed him to a two-year term as Dean of Graduate Studies, to begin concurrently. Dr. Fearon expresses his gratitude and thanks to Dr. Bruce Strang for his contributions as outgoing Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Acting Dean of Graduate Studies.
