BRANDON, MB – The President of Brandon University (BU) has returned from a trip to China with new partnership agreements which will provide exciting learning and exchange opportunities for both Chinese and Canadian students and faculty.

Dr. Gervan Fearon took part in a two week trade mission last month to the world’s most populous country and second largest economy, with representatives from the Manitoba government and the province’s top learning institutions. Education is a key focus given the provincial and federal initiatives to internationalize the country’s universities, and efforts in China to provide more students with experience abroad.

“I am happy to report that Brandon University has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) with seven Chinese colleges and universities representing more than 140,000 students,” says Dr. Fearon. “This is a significant culmination of many months and even years of discussion and advance work between our institutions and educational agents in Canada and China.”

The MOUs will forge the way for the development of collaborative academic programming, including opportunities for Chinese students who start academic degrees in their home country to transfer to BU. Teacher training, summer camps, and faculty exchanges will also be developed, adding to a decade-long partnership that has seen BU support and contribute to English language training and programs at Dalian University through hosting approximately 50 visiting Chinese professors

“This was an extremely successful trip that enabled us to both reaffirm past agreements and develop new partnerships,” says Dave Rowland, BU Director of International and trade mission participant who has travelled to China six times in the past five years for recruitment and partnership development. “More international students will have access to our campus, and BU students and staff will have greater opportunities to learn and teach in China.”

Brandon University, founded in 1899, promotes excellence in teaching, research, and scholarship; educating students so that they can make a meaningful difference as engaged citizens and leaders.
