BRANDON, MB – The review reads, “The audience was smitten with pianist Matthew Peavoy” – high praise for a first year music student from Brandon University (BU) debuting with the Red Deer Symphony.

Peavoy performed the first movement of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 9 in Alberta after winning the Symphony’s concerto competition. The Red Deer Advocate noted he “proved to be a fluid soloist capable of bringing out the delicate lyricism of this buoyant composition”.

“I felt fantastic, really happy,” says Peavoy. “Playing with an orchestra is what I want to do and I really felt at home with them during this performance. “

Peavoy, originally from Red Deer, previously performed with the city’s Symphony in 2008 as a 14 year old classical accordionist. He entered BU last fall, choosing the School of Music because of its strong national reputation.

School of Music Dean, Dr. Michael Kim, says he has the pleasure of teaching Peavoy. “We are very proud of Matthew, and are very happy to share in his successes. Our warmest congratulations to him on this great achievement!”

Brandon University, founded in 1899, promotes excellence in teaching, research, creation and scholarship; educating students so that they can make a meaningful difference as engaged citizens and leaders.

Sarah Hallikas, Annelise Hawrylak and Mitchell Wedgewood appeared on the world renowned stage February 18th with the Toronto-based Eastminster United Church Choir, a 30 voice ensemble selected to take part in a musical production by Distinguished Concerts Singers International.

“It was thrilling, amazing,” says Hallikas, a BU School of Music alumni. “Our audience even graced us with a standing ovation. That may have been the most exciting part – a standing ovation at Carnegie Hall. Check that off the to-do list!”

BU School of Music Dean, Dr. Michael Kim, couldn’t be more pleased. “This is a remarkable opportunity for anyone wanting to make a life of music. Brandon University is proud of Sarah, Annelise and Mitch and wish each of them continued success.”

All three BU alumni are currently in Toronto, continuing their musical educations. “Brandon University shaped us into the musicians that we are today,” says Hallikas, “and we are proud to represent BU on the international stage.”

Brandon University, founded in 1899, promotes excellence in teaching, research, creation and scholarship; educating students so that they can make a meaningful difference as engaged citizens and leaders.
