Orientation Committee

Trek (old Prospect) Theme

• Trek will be the new Prospect and will run from April 26 to May 7, 2010.
• The Trek theme will continue with Orientation in September.
• Need new image for Orientation, something that links with the Trek theme.
• Looking into ordering a book for all 1st-year students.
  - the author is a woman who climbed the 2nd largest mountain in the world.
  - possibly book her as our guest speaker for Launch.
• The novel would be incorporated into Trek and Orientation.
• The books will have to be ordered soon.

Orientation Activities Chair

• This year’s Activities Chair will be Laura Balanko from BUSU.
• Survival Skills Workshop
• Tracey indicated that her survival skills workshop was not well attended.
• Can the leaders be used to influence new students to attend these information sessions?
  - not always workable for some leaders with their class schedule.
• Should we make these sessions mandatory?
  - we have to be careful as to what we make mandatory.
  - students are a different generation, need hand-holding but reluctant to attend helpful sessions.
• Should survival workshops be held a week later, once students have settled into their schedule?
  - still not guaranteed they will show up.

Launch

• Want to incorporate Drum Cafe into the Launch.
• Have the Drum Cafe either open the Launch ceremony, or perform after the speaches etc.?
• Suzanne will contact Drum Cafe to see if they’re available that date and what their suggestions are regarding setup, etc.
• Auditorium and basement has been booked for September 7, 2010.
• Possible morning schedule:
  8:30 – students arrive to their scheduled rooms
  9:00-10:30 – meet with groups, ice breakers, campus tours, etc.
  10:45-11:30 – Launch welcoming ceremony (speeches, dignitaries)
  11:30-12:30 – Drum Cafe
  12:30-1:30 – lunch

Lunch

• Janet will look into using Subway and their 50′ subs, chips and a drink costs.
• If we use the basement of the Auditorium for lunch again, we should set up some tables and chairs for parents or small children.

Parking

• Tanya will speak with the City regarding free parking on the streets around campus for that day.
• Dave will speak to Dr. Poff about free parking in BU parking lots for that day.

Entertainment Speaker Suggestions

• Jon Montgomery – skeleton Olympian
• Kyle Parrott – speed skater from Minnedosa, competed in 2010 Olympics
• Leland Klassen – comedy – http://www.lelandklassen.com/Home.html
• Bring more suggestions for next meeting.
