Science Faculty Planning Committee
This committee was established by Science Faculty Council in November 2008. The committee membership is comprised of the Dean of Science and four members representing four different departments. The Chair is not necessarily the Dean and is a full voting member. The terms of office of the members shall be three years. The purpose of this committee is to plan for the future of Science Faculty and to deal with issues such as space and expansion. It is not meant to review new program proposals or program expansion requests from departments. This committee brings all recommendations back to Science Faculty Council.
The current membership is:
Dr. Phillip Goernert, Acting Dean of Science
Dr. Hamid Mumin, Geology (to August 31, 2013)
Mr. John Lindsay, Applied Disaster & Emergency Studies (to February 9, 2015)
Dr. Johannes Koch, Geography (to June 30, 2015)
Dr. Martin Lemaire, Chemistry (to December 31, 2015)
At the March 2012 SFC the terms of reference below were approved:
Terms of Reference – Science Faculty Planning Committee
PURPOSE
The Science Faculty Planning Committee is a standing committee of Science Faculty Council (SFC). Its purpose is to support SFC to plan for the future of the Faculty of Science. The Committee serves as a resource to the strategic planning process including exploring and developing ideas for SFC’s consideration. This may include a Faculty of Science strategic vision and plan, space, expansion and other concerns of a Faculty-wide nature at the direction of SFC. The Committee may request comments and/or other input from departments or programs to assist in fulfilling this purpose. The Committee is not meant to review new academic proposals or program expansion requests from departments except when requested to do so from a strategic, Faculty-wide perspective.
MEMBERSHIP
The members will include:
1) Dean of Science (ex-officio)
2) Four members elected by SFC. To ensure diversity of perspective, no department may have more than one member on the committee at any given time. Members serve on behalf of SFC, not as representatives of their departments or programs, and are encouraged to bring a faculty-wide perspective.
TERMS OF OFFICE
Faculty representatives will normally be appointed for a three (3) year term, with the opportunity to renew for an additional three (3) years. To ensure continuity, terms should be staggered and some memberships renewed so that no more than half of the committee members change in a calendar year.
CHAIR
The committee will elect its chair who will have full voting rights.
MEETINGS
The committee will meet as needed at the call of the Dean or Chair or at the request of two members.
VOTING
Each member shall have one vote and the Chair will vote to break ties.
QUORUM
The quorum is met with 50% (fifty per cent) of the Committee members in attendance.
DISTRIBUTION OF AGENDA, MINUTES AND REPORTING
The Chair will circulate an agenda to the committee at least one week prior to meetings. The minutes will be distributed to the Committee members and Dean of Science. The Chair will provide a report on the activities of the committee to Science Faculty Council.
