Math Skills
The Math Centre is part of the Academic Skills Centre in Student Services. We assist students who need to develop their numerical and mathematical skills. We are located in Room 102 of the A. E. McKenzie Building.
What We Do
We assist students in improving their comprehension of the basic concepts needed for success in a wide variety of university courses. Topics that may be discussed during appointments range from explaining ideas to applying them in practical contexts. The skills of reasoning, problem-solving, communicating, making connections will be developed, along with calculating and estimating.
What We Don’t Do
Since the service is a learning program, we do not solve students’ assignments for them. Students cannot drop off their work and pick it up later “corrected”. The students are responsible for solving the assigned questions or problems, and developing the methods and calculations suggested during appointments.
Services For Students
Workshops
During the first five weeks of each term we offer a series of math Skills workshops targeted to basic mathematical concepts whose knowledge is useful in many first year courses. Organized on a walk-in basis, these workshops are repeated twice a week to accommodate various schedules. Students who are unable to attend a scheduled workshop are encouraged to make an individual appointment to review the information presented in the workshop.
Please see the above link for topics, dates and times.
Walk-ins (Math Peer Tutors – TBA for 2nd term)
Walk-in math assistance is available during the fall and winter term (up to the last day of classes) through Math Peer Tutors hired by the Math Department, during times posted on the bulletin board outside the Academic Skills Centre. Students may make use of walk-in assistance in addition to scheduled appointments. Walk-ins should be used for quick questions or clarification. It is advisable that students seeking assistance bring class notes and material with them.
Individual and Group Appointments
Students are welcome to make appointments for individual or small group assistance with the Math Skills Specialist. Appointments are half hour in length, and students are restricted to no more than two (2) appointments per week and no more than one (1) appointment on any given day. Exceptions to these rules may be accommodated if possible, depending on availability of spaces. It is suggested that students come to the appointments with their class notes and materials, and any special instructions provided by professors.
Email
Students with “quick questions” are welcome to email them to the Math Skills Specialist. Please be advised that the reply may take up to one work day.
Services For Faculty
In-Class Presentations
The Math Centre delivers in-class (or in-lab) presentations to review basic concepts whose knowledge is essential for the course. The presentations can be customized to meet the specific needs of individual faculty members.
Out-of-class Presentation
The Math Centre cooperates with departments and faculties to customize and deliver presentations that meet the specific needs of their students. In order to reach as many students as possible, these workshops are scheduled at times convenient to students in the department or faculty.
