Looking ahead,\u00a0the Campus Master Plan will be a guide to: the placement\u00a0and character of new buildings, building renovations,\u00a0and expansions; the use, location, and character of open\u00a0spaces; and, the hierarchy, character, and role of streets\u00a0and paths in recognition of the academic and community\u00a0engagement direction of the University. BU has locations\u00a0in Brandon and Winnipeg, which form the basis for this\u00a0report.<\/p>\n<p>BU retained DIALOG to lead the consultant team,\u00a0providing master planning, design and public engagement\u00a0expertise. DIALOG worked with Resource Planning\u00a0Group Inc. (RPG), who provided space planning\u00a0analysis and expertise.<\/p>\n<h3>Brandon University\u2019s Strategic Objectives<\/h3>\n<p>Brandon University outlined a series of overarching\u00a0strategic objectives for the University as it shifts into\u00a0a new cycle of planning for the campus through the\u00a0launch of a 20-30 year Campus Master Plan. They have\u00a0influenced the Vision achieved for the Plan, and through\u00a0a highly integrated engagement process, guided the\u00a0development of Policy Frameworks to enable the Plan\u2019s\u00a0implementation over time. The Plan will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Serve the University\u2019s Mission Statement and\u00a0Academic Plan.<\/li>\n<li>Serve as a flexible framework for future decisions\u00a0regarding the long-range physical development of the\u00a0Campus.<\/li>\n<li>Strive to maximize the appropriate and efficient\u00a0use of built and green space, to provide new\u00a0opportunities, and to manage circulation and\u00a0movement on the campus in a way that prioritizes\u00a0the pedestrian.<\/li>\n<li>Engage and serve the diverse academic and social\u00a0needs and interests of the University community.<\/li>\n<li>Provide opportunities to enhance relationships\u00a0with Indigenous peoples and cultivate culturally\u00a0supportive facilities and services in future\u00a0developments.<\/li>\n<li>Provide flexibility to respond to changing needs,\u00a0trends, and future opportunities.<\/li>\n<li>Accommodate expanded enrolment.<\/li>\n<li>Address the role of the University in City growth and\u00a0development.<\/li>\n<li>Address specific key issues facing the University\u00a0related to physical development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Responding to changes in\u00a0Post Secondary Education<\/h3>\n<p>The world of post secondary education is changing.\u00a0There are several trends that are changing the design of\u00a0universities and affecting decisions around the design of\u00a0classroom and social spaces, the approach to teaching and\u00a0learning, and the quality and diversity of services and\u00a0amenities. Others have unfolded during the process of\u00a0this Plan. The initiatives are driven by the need to expand\u00a0and diversify student housing; to provide affordable\u00a0housing for students and seniors; to create a flexible Plan\u00a0that takes a comprehensive and sustainable approach\u00a0to developing buildings, open spaces, and movement\u00a0networks to meet the University\u2019s strategic objectives.<\/p>\n<p>The initiatives include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The acquisition of a portion of the Fleming School\u00a0site to develop student family housing in close\u00a0proximity to the Campus.<\/li>\n<li>The development of a Campus Master Plan.<\/li>\n<li>The acquisition of consolidated properties in\u00a0Brandon\u2019s downtown core, to expand the University\u2019s\u00a0footprint in an area that will foster new academic,\u00a0social, cultural, and community engagement\u00a0opportunities, and help catalyze downtown\u00a0revitalization.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The Indigenous community\u00a0and Brandon University<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_204\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 300px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/IntroConsult-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/IntroConsult-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/IntroConsult-180x135.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/IntroConsult-250x187.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/IntroConsult.jpg 506w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Engagement and continued conversations to build strong relationships.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>BU seeks to position itself as a \u201chome\u201d \u2014 a welcoming\u00a0and safe destination for Indigenous peoples. The Vision\u00a0for the University is to create a place where the history,\u00a0diversity, culture, language, and ceremony of Indigenous\u00a0peoples is an integral part of the physical, social,\u00a0educational, recreational, and operational environment\u00a0on the Campus. The Plan is an opportunity to celebrate\u00a0Indigenous peoples\u2019 cultures, enhance understanding of\u00a0their culture, hear their stories, and support their needs.<\/p>\n<p>The following are relevant objectives, in this respect:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Creating a welcoming and inclusive physical, social,\u00a0cultural, academic, and safe environment for\u00a0Indigenous peoples.<\/li>\n<li>Building a strong relationships through continued\u00a0conversation and engagement, that starts by\u00a0listening.<\/li>\n<li>Creating opportunities for Indigenous placemaking on\u00a0campus, a forum in which the community can tell the\u00a0past, present, and future story of Indigenous peoples,\u00a0and be heard and respected.<\/li>\n<li>Creating opportunities to align initiatives with other\u00a0institutions and organizations to address the needs of\u00a0Indigenous peoples.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2016, BU embarked on a process to develop a Campus\u00a0Master Plan that sets a direction for its future growth and\u00a0development over the coming decades.
