{"id":209,"date":"2017-08-02T21:51:06","date_gmt":"2017-08-02T21:51:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/?page_id=209"},"modified":"2017-08-02T21:51:06","modified_gmt":"2017-08-02T21:51:06","slug":"a-collaborative-engagement-process","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/background\/a-collaborative-engagement-process\/","title":{"rendered":"A Collaborative Engagement Process"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Plan was developed through a highly inclusive and collaborative process\u00a0that was structured around engagement events that advanced the analysis,\u00a0planning, and conceptual design laid out in this Plan.<\/p>\n<h3>The Engagement Process<\/h3>\n<p>The evolution of the Plan\u2019s design and supportive frameworks were pushed\u00a0forward through a series of engagement events held throughout the process\u00a0including one-on-one stakeholder interviews, table workshop discussions,\u00a0pop-up events located throughout the campus, targeted meetings with key\u00a0stakeholders, and public open houses as a broader outreach to the community.\u00a0This process was designed to create a Plan that will meet a diversity of\u00a0stakeholder\u2019s needs. These are stakeholders that will be influenced by,\u00a0will benefit from, and will continue to play a key role in, the growth and\u00a0development of the University now, and into the future.<\/p>\n<p>Stakeholders that have been integral to the conversation and will continue\u00a0to be include: BU students, staff, faculty, and alumni; City of Brandon staff;\u00a0the Brandon Chamber of Commerce; representatives from the Indigenous\u00a0Community including students, alumni, residents, and elders; representatives\u00a0from Southwest Manitoba School Division and Assiniboine College; potential\u00a0business partners; and, surrounding neighbours and community members.<\/p>\n<p>The following provides an overview of the engagement process.<\/p>\n<h3>Stakeholder Interviews<\/h3>\n<h4>September\u2013October 2016<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult1-300x207.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult1-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult1-180x124.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult1-250x173.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult1.jpg 434w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Throughout all consultation event stages, various key stakeholders were\u00a0invited to meet the project team and participate in informal interviews. The\u00a0interviews consisted of 1-hour sessions where participants voiced their issues\u00a0and challenges from their varying perspectives. They provided opportunities\u00a0and ideas toward defining a new future for the Brandon University Campus.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, some participants provided supportive information and materials\u00a0including current and proposed initiatives, ideas and background documents.<\/p>\n<p>Stakeholders in attendance included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>BU students, faculty, and staff<\/li>\n<li>BU senior management<\/li>\n<li>Indigenous peoples, including current students and alumni<\/li>\n<li>City of Brandon staff<\/li>\n<li>Brandon Chamber of Commerce<\/li>\n<li>Southwest Manitoba School Division Superintendents<\/li>\n<li>Assiniboine Community College representatives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Pop-up Open House &amp; Workshop #1<\/h3>\n<h4>September 16, 2016<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult2-300x206.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult2-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult2-180x124.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult2-250x172.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult2.jpg 436w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The Pop-up Open House and Workshop in September 2016 marked the start\u00a0of the public consultation process. Based on a \u201cfresh eyes\u201d analysis of Brandon\u00a0University, the consultant team brought forward a series of development\u00a0themes to gauge the priorities that the BU community identified for the Campus.<\/p>\n<p>From these responses, emerging themes and a draft Vision and Planning\u00a0Principles were established.<\/p>\n<h3>Rotating Pop-up Open Houses<\/h3>\n<h4>September\u2013October 2016<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult3-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult3-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult3-180x122.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult3-250x170.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult3.jpg 438w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Starting on September 16, 2016, a rotating series of Pop-up Open Houses were\u00a0set up at several locations around the Campus to showcase the consultant\u00a0team\u2019s \u201cfresh eyes\u201d analysis. The Pop-up Open Houses included a number of\u00a0interactive display panels that invited comments from participants. These open\u00a0houses were held at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dr. James and Lucille Brown Health Studies Complex<\/li>\n<li>Education Building<\/li>\n<li>Queen Elizabeth II Music Building<\/li>\n<li>Harvest Hall<\/li>\n<li>Knowles Douglas Student Union Building<\/li>\n<li>Physical Plant Building<\/li>\n<li>John R. Brodie Science Centre<\/li>\n<li>John E. Robbins Library<\/li>\n<li>Healthy Living Centre (homecoming weekend)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Pop-up Event, Public Open House, and\u00a0Workshop #2<\/h3>\n<h4>November 28\u201329, 2016<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult4-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult4-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult4-180x123.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult4-250x171.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult4.jpg 438w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>At the second Pop-up Event, Workshop, and Public Open House, the consultant\u00a0team met with the University faculty and staff, community stakeholders and\u00a0the public to present a draft Vision and draft Planning Principles based on\u00a0ideas generated in the first phase. Participants were also encouraged to provide\u00a0their feedback on the draft Plan. The three engagement events provided robust\u00a0feedback was used to inform the next stage of the Plan\u2019s development.<\/p>\n<h3>Pop-up Event at the Winnipeg Campus<\/h3>\n<h4>November 28, 2016<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult6-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult6-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult6-180x123.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult6-250x171.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult6.jpg 438w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>A Pop-up Open House was also held on November 28th at BU\u2019s Winnipeg\u00a0campus, which is home to its Psychiatric Nursing Faculty. The draft Vision\u00a0and Planning Principles were presented. Faculty and staff also met with the\u00a0consultant team and provided a tour of the facilities and faculty space and\u00a0feedback on their spacial, academic, and amenity needs.<\/p>\n<h3>Indigenous Community Feast\u00a0&amp; Discussion<\/h3>\n<h4>November 28, 2016<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult7-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult7-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult7-180x123.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult7-250x171.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/consult7.jpg 438w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>On November 28, 2016, members of the Indigenous Community, including\u00a0current students and alumni, were invited to meet with the project team for\u00a0dinner and a discussion on their needs, aspirations, and concerns as they relate\u00a0to the Plan. During the meeting the draft Plan\u2019s Vision, Planning Principles, and\u00a0Concept Plan were presented for comment. The Public Open House followed the workshop,\u00a0which provided a public forum for comments on the content as well as the\u00a0results of the workshop.
