It began as a liberal arts college\u00a0that offered some theological training and high school\u00a0education, in addition to a school of music (since 1906).\u00a0Brandon College was affiliated with McMaster University\u00a0and the Baptist Union of Western Canada until 1938,\u00a0when the Baptist Union decided it could no longer\u00a0support the college due to financial reasons. In that\u00a0year, Brandon College became a non-denominational\u00a0corporation and joined with the University of Manitoba\u00a0as an affiliated college.<\/p>\n<p>BU received its charter on June 5, 1967, when Princess\u00a0Alexandra and the Honourable Angus Ogilvie visited\u00a0Brandon. Programming in baccalaureate programs\u00a0expanded and evolved rapidly after 1967 and has\u00a0continued to present day.<\/p>\n<p>BU has since been recognized for its liberal arts and\u00a0sciences programs, and has maintained a steady-growing\u00a0student population from rural Manitoba and beyond.\u00a0Its physical campus has grown building by building (the\u00a0most recent which include the Clark Hall and the Original\u00a0Building renovation in 1997, Health Studies building in\u00a02003, Healthy Living Centre in 2013) to fill its campus\u00a0west of downtown Brandon, and now requires a Campus\u00a0Master Plan to best accommodate future growth and\u00a0renew the existing campus condition.<\/p>\n<h3>Campus Buildings<\/h3>\n<p>Campus buildings display a variety of styles and\u00a0materials, and as the University has grown, the scale\u00a0and style of buildings has changed to reflect the times.\u00a0The earliest structures prior to the University receiving\u00a0its charter display a romanesque revival style such\u00a0as historic Clark Hall, while buildings dating to the\u00a01960\u2019s-1970\u2019s reflect modernist design elements and\u00a0Brutalist styles, such as the Western Manitoba Centennial\u00a0Auditorium. More recent structures have taken on more\u00a0contemporary forms, with newer buildings emphasizing\u00a0less concrete and stone, and incorporating more glazing\u00a0and varying cladding materials.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brandon University traces its roots back to the late 19th\u00a0century and the growth of higher education institutions\u00a0in the City of Brandon.
