The diagram above reflects a\u00a0compilation of eight Design Moves for the\u00a0Campus Master Plan that were derived from input\u00a0garnered during the engagement process. The\u00a0Design Moves are key structural components that\u00a0define the Concept Plan. They illustrate an overall\u00a0design direction that includes: defining campus\u00a0edges and accessibility; identifying built form\u00a0opportunities; creating open space diversity and\u00a0enhancement; enhancing pedestrianization and\u00a0connectivity; identifying parking and servicing\u00a0strategies; and developing a compact mixed-use\u00a0campus and a unique community destination.<\/p>\n

The following looks at each of the Design Moves in\u00a0terms of defining their contribution to the overall\u00a0development and enhancement of the Campus.<\/p>\n

Improving the Interface and\u00a0Access to the Campus and\u00a0Community<\/h2>\n\"Map<\/a>\n

The Campus\u2019 frontages and edge condition will be improved,\u00a0especially along 18th Street and Victoria Avenue. This will\u00a0create a more pedestrian-friendly environment and present an\u00a0improved face to the community that better represents Brandon\u00a0University. It will highlight the Campus\u2019 high-quality design,\u00a0unique identity, and presence, and reinforce the identity of the\u00a0University District.<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Enhancing Internal Streets<\/h2>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

Streets internal to the Campus will be enhanced to create a\u00a0<\/span>more pedestrian-friendly environment. For instance: enhancing\u00a0the tree canopy and plantings along pedestrian walkways and\u00a0streets; improving sidewalks and walkways; allowing on-street\u00a0parking on both sides of the street; enhanced pedestrian-scale\u00a0lighting along pathways; and, improving pedestrian markings at\u00a0intersections and other potential crossing points. A key aspect of\u00a0this Big Move is to re-connect Lorne Ave to 20th Street, creating\u00a0two distinct development blocks and an additional connection\u00a0point to the residential areas to the west.<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Defining Gateways to a University\u00a0District<\/h2>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

The sense of entry to the campus will be improved, for\u00a0pedestrians and vehicles, by defining a hierarchy of gateways to\u00a0the campus. This can include emphasizing the architecture and\u00a0design of new buildings at gateways, including public art in open\u00a0spaces, and well-marked pedestrian crossings. These initiatives\u00a0help to reinforce the Campus\u2019 identity, presence, and sense\u00a0of place, improve people\u2019s experience of it, and facilitate safe\u00a0connections to surrounding areas.<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Defining Soft Sites For Development<\/h2>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

Soft sites are opportunities for new building development on\u00a0campus. The Plan proposes a series of new buildings primarily\u00a0along the west and south areas of the Campus for the purpose of:\u00a0defining and framing existing and new open spaces, streets, and\u00a0pedestrian linkages; expanding academic space and diversifying\u00a0uses on campus; providing structured parking and below\u00a0grade parking; creating gateway and landmark features at key\u00a0locations; and, fostering iconic architecture.<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Creating Purposeful Open Spaces<\/h2>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

The open space network on campus is rationalized to provide a\u00a0clear structure of spaces with correlated uses and functions that\u00a0meet a diversity of needs. A key aspect of this approach is to bring\u00a0back some of the elements of the Campus\u2019 original design that\u00a0have been eroded by surface parking lots. This includes creating\u00a0a central green spine. Other open space opportunities include\u00a0defining three major green spaces of distinct character at the\u00a0centre of the Campus, and connecting different areas with green\u00a0linkages.<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n<\/div>\n

Improving Pedestrian Linkages<\/h2>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

Pedestrian movement routes will be expanded and rationalized\u00a0so they are legible, intuitive to navigate, and inviting and\u00a0welcoming for pedestrians. This may involve a number of\u00a0initiatives, such as: extending linkages to new and existing\u00a0destinations internally, including the south campus area, and\u00a0externally, including the BU Downtown Campus and the Fleming\u00a0School site; emphasizing the prominence of the Campus\u2019 central\u00a0spine as a movement corridor; improving landscape design in\u00a0terms of planting, paving, and lighting. Pedestrian linkages within\u00a0connect to broader movement networks such as Princess and\u00a0Lorne Avenue, to improve the Campus\u2019 physical integration with\u00a0the city.<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Defining a Parking and Servicing Strategy<\/h2>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

One of the key Big Moves for the Plan is to define purposeful\u00a0open spaces and an overall pedestrian-oriented environment\u00a0on the Campus. While this is a key priority, access for service\u00a0vehicles to existing and proposed buildings will be maintained.\u00a0This can be accomplished through the design of internal campus\u00a0spaces to demarcate areas for vehicles while facilitating the free flow\u00a0of pedestrians.<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n<\/div>\n

Creating a Mixed-Use Campus<\/h2>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

Creating a mix of uses allows for a more complete experience\u00a0where all aspects of the Campus are enjoyed and used by the\u00a0University, the community, and the city. For example, this\u00a0includes having amenities in all areas of the Campus that are\u00a0highly accessible in order to draw the community in from all\u00a0sides. There was also a recognition to identify opportunities to\u00a0locate specific uses and amenities to support the Indigenous\u00a0Community throughout the Campus and foster Indigenous\u00a0placemaking.<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
