A series of recurring themes and ideas emerged from the input provided\u00a0by stakeholders during the project\u2019s engagement events. These themes have helped to shape the Vision and Planning Principles and provide a\u00a0clear direction and rationale for the Plan\u2019s design and policy frameworks.\u00a0They consider the opportunities identified through the existing conditions\u00a0and space planning analysis; addressing shifting trends in post secondary\u00a0education; and responding to the objectives outlined in this chapter.<\/p>\n

They are the key drivers that will move Brandon University in a new\u00a0and exciting direction, responding to a diversity of student, academic,\u00a0community and City needs.<\/p>\n

A University District<\/h2>\n
    \n
  • Support the growth of a complete University District that is integrated\u00a0with the surrounding community, serving as an anchor and hub of\u00a0activity and animation within the city.<\/li>\n
  • Maintain and support the Campus\u2019 intimate-scale, fostering a closeknit\u00a0community.<\/li>\n
  • Create a student-centred institution supporting opportunities and\u00a0initiatives to evolve as a centre for innovative research and creative\u00a0learning.<\/li>\n
  • Position BU, including the main campus and the downtown campus, as\u00a0a hub of activity and catalyst for positive change in Brandon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n

    Inviting and Accessible<\/h2>\n
      \n
    • Take down physical barriers, such as landscaping (i.e. hedges),\u00a0that keep the University from being visible and accessible by the\u00a0surrounding community.<\/li>\n
    • Redefine the Campus entrance to make it more prominent and\u00a0evident.<\/li>\n
    • Enhance pedestrian safety by locating crossings at key intersections,\u00a0and prioritizing pedestrian movement on internal Campus streets.<\/li>\n
    • Improve internal and external connectivity between campus buildings\u00a0and to the surrounding community.<\/li>\n
    • Provide spaces and services to support people from a diversity of\u00a0social, economic, and cultural backgrounds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

      Indigenization of the Campus<\/h2>\n
        \n
      • Celebrate Indigenous people\u2019s history and culture on campus with\u00a0programs and events, and through the design of open spaces,\u00a0buildings, and art.<\/li>\n
      • Support the Indigenous community by creating welcoming and\u00a0inclusive spaces on campus.<\/li>\n
      • Create opportunities to strengthen the Indigenous presence within the\u00a0University body.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n

        Community Engagement<\/h2>\n
          \n
        • Find new ways to engage the community and encourage their use\u00a0and enjoyment of the Campus, and enhance the University\u2019s role in\u00a0community growth and interaction.<\/li>\n
        • Forge new partnerships with private and public sector entities\u00a0to create new programs, spaces, activities, and opportunities for\u00a0students.<\/li>\n
        • Create better connections between BU\u2019s Main Campus and Downtown\u00a0Campus, such as through a \u201cUniversity Mile\u201d consisting of retail,\u00a0restaurants, and pubs.<\/li>\n
        • Create an environment that contributes to the University-town feel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

          Places for Social Gathering<\/h2>\n

            24\/7 Campus<\/h2>\n
              \n
            • Create an animated environment by facilitating student, community,\u00a0and city activities, events, and programming during the day, evenings,\u00a0and throughout the year.<\/li>\n
            • Create flexible indoor gathering spaces and outdoor open spaces to\u00a0accommodate a diversity of uses.<\/li>\n
            • Coordinate recreational events with other institutions such as\u00a0elementary schools, to be held on campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

              A Walkable and Active Campus<\/h2>\n

              • Prioritize walkability with a network of accessible sidewalks and\u00a0pathways, to support active living and healthy lifestyles.<\/li>\n
              • Improve wayfinding and make it easier for visitors and newcomers to\u00a0the Campus to find their way around.<\/li>\n
              • Provide alternate options of parking and travel for commuters that\u00a0travel by car.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n

                A Central Spine<\/h2>\n

                • Re-establish the north-south and east-west pedestrian corridors that\u00a0defined the Campus\u2019 original design.<\/li>\n
                • Create a connected network of open spaces that link to the corridors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

                  Campus Design and Identity<\/h2>\n

                  • Enhance the aesthetic appeal of the Campus through engaging\u00a0architecture and beautiful and inviting open spaces.<\/li>\n
                  • Create a stronger sense of place and arrival on campus with gateway\u00a0buildings, art, landscaping, and landmark features.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n
