Our Planning Principles provide a foundation for design work, policies,\u00a0and related recommendations in the Campus Master Plan, and guide the\u00a0development of the Concept Plan and Plan Frameworks.<\/p>\n

1. Indigenous<\/h2>\n

Provide a strong sense of belonging and identity within the Campus for our Indigenous Community<\/strong><\/p>\n

BU should embrace the opportunity to engage with its Indigenous Community through a series of placemaking initiatives to create\u00a0a sense of belonging and identity. This may include cross-cultural listening and learning sessions and recognizing Indigenous history\u00a0and cultural heritage through art, events and programs, landscape design, and the location of Indigenous structures and features.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

2. Unique<\/h2>\n

Cultivate and showcase Brandon University\u2019s\u00a0unique identity, sense of place, and commitment\u00a0to innovative student-centred pedagogy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

All aspects of the Campus, from buildings, to open\u00a0spaces, paths, and interior spaces, should convey a\u00a0unique, and high-quality, sense of place. The Campus\u00a0design and character should reflect BU\u2019s ambition to\u00a0continue to strive for excellence as a student-centered\u00a0institution of choice, while supporting its growth as a\u00a0centre for innovative research and creative activity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

3. Welcoming<\/h2>\n

Create an inclusive, accessible, and welcoming\u00a0campus that is integrated with the community\u00a0around it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

BU should design the campus to break down physical,\u00a0social, economic, and cultural walls and facilitate\u00a0pathways to a university education and community\u00a0engagement. This includes creating a physically\u00a0accessible campus with welcoming frontages to all\u00a0surrounding areas, as well as providing the spaces and\u00a0services to support people from a diversity of social,\u00a0economic, and cultural backgrounds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

4. Safe<\/h2>\n

Support a safe and inviting campus environment.<\/strong><\/p>\n

BU should be a leader in providing a safe and inviting campus\u00a0environment and public realm. Its physical design should include\u00a0beautiful and attractive internal and external social gathering\u00a0spaces, pathways, corridors, and streets that are interconnected,\u00a0well-illuminated, and universally accessible, with clear sightlines,\u00a0and intuitive wayfinding. All Brandon University locations\u00a0should support a sense of safety and inviting students, faculty\u00a0and staff, and community members to engage in post-secondary\u00a0education and community development.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

5. Engaged<\/h2>\n

Strengthen relationships and explore new\u00a0opportunities to connect with, and be supportive of,\u00a0other institutions, the broader community, and the\u00a0city.<\/strong><\/p>\n

BU should continue to find ways to engage and connect\u00a0with the broader community, including individuals\u00a0living in Brandon, and local businesses, leaders, artists,\u00a0and community groups. Stronger relationships with\u00a0other institutions and organizations will provide an\u00a0opportunity to position BU as a hub of activity and\u00a0catalyst for positive change in Brandon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

6. Vibrant<\/h2>\n

Provide a range of spaces, places, and\u00a0amenities to support a vibrant and animated\u00a0campus environment at different times of the\u00a0day and year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

BU should create a diverse range of places, amenities,\u00a0and services that meet a variety of needs for different\u00a0users, including for Indigenous peoples, and that help to\u00a0sustain a sense of activity, excitement, and energy on the\u00a0Campus throughout the day, evening, and at all times of\u00a0the year, especially during the winter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

7. Healthy<\/h2>\n

Foster a campus environment that supports\u00a0individual and community wellbeing and healthy,\u00a0active living.<\/strong><\/p>\n

BU should take steps to support the overall health\u00a0and well being of the members of the Campus\u2019\u00a0community through the design and provision of\u00a0spaces, programming, and amenities. This may include\u00a0initiatives such as providing spaces to host ceremonial\u00a0events in keeping with Indigenous peoples\u2019 tradition\u00a0and supporting active living.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

8. Walkable<\/h2>\n

Design a compact, walkable environment that\u00a0implements a sustainable approach to campus\u00a0development and growth.<\/strong><\/p>\n

BU should guide the continued physical evolution of its\u00a0campus growth in a compact manner, one that supports\u00a0walking by creating safe and attractive, pedestrian-friendly\u00a0spaces with short travel distances between buildings. It\u00a0should support a multi-modal transportation strategy\u00a0that promotes active transportation and environmentally-friendly\u00a0options. These include walking, cycling, and transit\u00a0in between campuses and to other institutions or satellite\u00a0partnership locations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

9. Sustainable<\/h2>\n

Implement sustainable practices and design\u00a0initiatives on campus.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The design of buildings, open spaces, and movement\u00a0networks should implement sustainable design\u00a0strategies and approaches that reduce waste and\u00a0energy use. Other sustainable practices, strategies, and\u00a0programs that have a positive influence on day-to-day\u00a0life should also be promoted on the Campus.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
