Buildings play a critical role in creating a\u00a0welcoming, accessible, and safe environment by providing\u00a0a face and eyes on the public realm. Essentially, there\u00a0should be no back condition to a building, especially\u00a0where there are few service laneways. This means that\u00a0the service side of buildings must also be aesthetically\u00a0pleasing and pedestrian friendly, with windows, door\u00a0access points, and landscaping. Building frontages are marked in red, entrances are marked with triangles.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Buildings along the edge should reflect the pulse of the\u00a0Campus. Building frontages should be designed to be\u00a0animated, transparent, and engaging to the community.\u00a0These buildings should reflect the Campus\u2019 pedagogical\u00a0function and internal activity such as learning labs, social\u00a0gathering spaces, gallery and recreational space. They\u00a0should also be the locations for community gathering\u00a0spaces that are visibly and physically accessible from the\u00a0Campus\u2019 periphery.<\/p>\n<h3>Policies:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>All campus buildings should have articulated frontages\u00a0on all sides in order to address, and provide an attractive\u00a0face to, the surrounding public realm and open spaces.<\/li>\n<li>Building frontages must create a welcoming and\u00a0attractive street environment for pedestrians. All\u00a0buildings must have welcoming fa\u00e7ades, with front\u00a0door access connecting to the sidewalks, pathways,\u00a0and streets.<\/li>\n<li>Buildings must engage all aspects of the public realm\u00a0that surrounds them, whether it be a pedestrian\u00a0corridor, an open space, a service route, or a street.<\/li>\n<li>\n<div id=\"attachment_390\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 300px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/built9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/built9-300x176.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/built9-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/built9-180x105.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/built9-250x146.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/built9-640x375.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/built9.jpg 741w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Precedent: Transparency at grade, canopies, and multiple access points create a comfortable and safe environment.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Building must have multiple points of access, and a\u00a0high level of transparency to all open spaces, streets,\u00a0and pedestrian passageways to create a comfortable,\u00a0and safe environment.<\/li>\n<li>Buildings should provide lighting, and weather\u00a0mitigation, such as canopies to create safe and\u00a0comfortable open spaces.<\/li>\n<li>Large blank walls or uninterrupted building masses\u00a0should be avoided.<\/li>\n<li>Building must have \u201cunlocked\u201d access to all open\u00a0spaces to encourage use, passage, and enjoyment\u00a0throughout the year, and to provide a greater level of\u00a0permeability through the campus.<\/li>\n<li>Service entrances and areas should not be located\u00a0in the front of buildings and should be consolidated\u00a0where possible, along a shared service corridor.
