Each\u00a0courtyard adds to the variety of open spaces and open\u00a0space design, thereby bringing a diversity of landscape\u00a0characteristics and forms to the overall Framework.\u00a0Generally, courtyards should be designed as flexible\u00a0spaces for passive recreation and activity. There should\u00a0be multiple entrances onto the spaces from the buildings\u00a0that frame them. They should be well lit with pedestrian-scale\u00a0lighting and transparent building frontages. At-grade\u00a0uses should animate the space so that they are\u00a0comfortable and safe places to be. The courtyards also\u00a0provide the perfect opportunities to tell the Indigenous\u00a0story through design, planting, and the integration of\u00a0art as spaces that can be viewed and experienced from\u00a0surrounding buildings.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_485\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 279px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open17.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open17-204x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"279\" height=\"410\" class=\"wp-image-485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open17-204x300.png 204w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open17-768x1130.png 768w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open17-696x1024.png 696w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open17-136x200.png 136w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open17-250x368.png 250w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open17-640x941.png 640w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open17.png 922w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 279px) 100vw, 279px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Schedule 13: The Courtyards<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The recommendations above apply to all existing and new\u00a0courtyard spaces but the following sections provide more\u00a0specific recommendations that speak to increased use of\u00a0the existing courtyards spaces and the enhancement of\u00a0the unique elements within.<\/p>\n<h2>School of Music Outdoor Theatre Courtyard<\/h2>\n<p>The School of Music Outdoor Theatre Courtyard is one\u00a0of the University\u2019s key heritage landscape assets to be\u00a0conserved and enhanced. The courtyard space is framed\u00a0by a mature canopy of trees and is very similar in\u00a0character to the Forest Landscape open space. It provides\u00a0opportunities for passive activity, a quiet place to study,\u00a0and appreciate art. It is a beautiful landscape to view and\u00a0experience from the indoors in the cold seasons, and the\u00a0outdoors in the warm seasons.<\/p>\n<h3>Policies:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Preserve and enhance the existing trees and\u00a0landscape features.<\/li>\n<li>Re-purpose the outdoor amphitheatre as a place\u00a0for ceremonial use by Indigenous peoples, and for\u00a0temporary and permanent art installations.<\/li>\n<li>Provide greater access onto the space. Remove the\u00a0pit fronting the student lounge and provide a door\u00a0access to the open space. Transform the pit with\u00a0terraced seating or other innovative design measures.<\/li>\n<li>The at-grade use of all new buildings should provide\u00a0\u201ceyes on the courtyard\u201d, animate the space, and\u00a0provide internal and external pedestrian\u00a0linkages\u00a0between the courtyard and buildings.\n<div id=\"attachment_487\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 300px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open19.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open19-300x175.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"175\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-487\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open19-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open19-180x105.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open19-250x146.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open19.jpg 402w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Precedent: Buildings front open space providing \u201ceyes-on-the-courtyard\u201d<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n<li>All new buildings that front the courtyard should\u00a0provide multiple points of access to it, and a high\u00a0degree of transparency fronting it. The building\u00a0should help to illuminate the open space at night.<\/li>\n<li>Provide pedestrian-scale lighting to allow use of\u00a0the courtyard space at night. Consider sustainable\u00a0\u201cDark Sky Lighting\u201d systems in the forested setting to\u00a0protect wildlife habitat.<\/li>\n<li>Provide seating and benches to increase the use of\u00a0the space.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>McMaster Hall Courtyard<\/h2>\n<p>The McMaster Hall Courtyard is a very unique open space\u00a0on the Campus. It is a space that is well viewed by the\u00a0buildings that surround it. The terraced grading creates\u00a0unique design opportunities for seating and increased\u00a0use and enjoyment of the courtyard and the vegetable\u00a0gardens within.<\/p>\n<h3>Policies:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Redesign the planters with sitting edges and consider\u00a0the use of high quality materials such as wood and\u00a0stone in keeping with the character of the University,\u00a0and to enhance the look and feel of the space.\n<div id=\"attachment_488\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 300px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open20.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open20-300x176.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open20-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open20-180x106.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open20-250x147.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open20.jpg 369w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Precedent: Planters with high quality materials and sitting edges<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n<li>Integrate trees into the planter landscape to beautify\u00a0the space.<\/li>\n<li>Accommodate plants and planting techniques that are\u00a0significant for Indigenous peoples, in order to support\u00a0ceremonial functions and cultural education.<\/li>\n<li>Redesign the pedestrian passageway so that it is\u00a0more inviting and attractive as the face to the street.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium\u00a0Courtyard<\/h2>\n<p>This urban space functions both as a courtyard and the\u00a0forecourt or \u201clobby for the auditorium. It should be the\u00a0place to linger and socialize before and after an event. It\u00a0must also function as a space to sit and linger during nonevent\u00a0hours. Because of its location, the courtyard space\u00a0must also function as part of the north west gateway into\u00a0the Campus and should be designed as a welcoming and\u00a0attractive space, as the \u201cmeeting place\u201d on the corner.<\/p>\n<h3>Policies:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The courtyard should be designed as an extension of\u00a0the streetscape design with places to sit and linger.\n<div id=\"attachment_489\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 300px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open21-300x175.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"175\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-489\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open21-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open21-180x105.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open21-250x146.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open21.jpg 506w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Precedent: Courtyard with places to sit and linger<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n<li>Landscaping should be used to soften the\u00a0architectural design and feel of the building.<\/li>\n<li>The drop-off area should be removed to provide a\u00a0more generous space and to accommodate seating\u00a0and landscaping. The drop-off area for the auditorium\u00a0should be relocated within designated lay-by spaces\u00a0on the street fronting the building.<\/li>\n<li>The \u201cgrand stairs\u201d should be maintained and\u00a0enhanced as a key component of the original design\u00a0but should also be used as seating within the space.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Courtyard open spaces are the opportunities to\u00a0create beautiful, unique, and intimate places.
