They are public\u00a0places, and as such, are an integral component of the Open\u00a0Space Framework. They function similar to the Green\u00a0Linkages in that they provide attractive green connections\u00a0to places throughout the Campus and beyond. They are\u00a0opportunities to enhance and strengthen linkages to other\u00a0University properties such as the Fleming School site and\u00a0the BU Downtown Campus. They also function as Plazas,\u00a0as places to walk, cycle, sit, linger, read, and wait for a\u00a0bus. They are destinations and gathering spaces that\u00a0allow for spontaneous interaction, planned programs and\u00a0events. Importantly, they also help to define how people\u00a0experience, move through, and use the campus with ease\u00a0and comfort.<\/p>\n<h3>Policies:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Streets should be designed to function as pedestrian-priority\u00a0spaces, while accommodating all modes of\u00a0transportation including bicycles, cars, buses, and\u00a0service vehicles.<\/li>\n<li>Traffic speeds should reduced along internal campus\u00a0streets and physical measures to mitigate traffic\u00a0should be integrated in the streetscape design. Such\u00a0measures include raised crosswalks, signage, street\u00a0trees and landscaping, parking bump-outs, on-street\u00a0parking, and enhanced paving materials such as brick\u00a0or stone.<\/li>\n<li>Streetscape design should create welcoming,\u00a0beautiful, and comfortable places to walk in all seasons.<\/li>\n<li>Streets should have generous sidewalks, attractive\u00a0landscaping, street trees, and lighting for both\u00a0pedestrians and vehicles.\n<div id=\"attachment_509\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 300px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open30.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open30-300x176.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-509\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open30-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open30-180x106.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open30-250x147.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/open30.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Precedent: Attractive streetscape design<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n<li>Streetscape design should incorporate attractive\u00a0signage to assist wayfinding within the Campus, to\u00a0neighbouring University properties, and to satellite properties such as the Fleming School site and the BU\u00a0Downtown Campus.<\/li>\n<li>Opportunities for storm water management should\u00a0be integrated in the streetscape design such as rain\u00a0gardens and bio-swales.<\/li>\n<li>Sustainable design approaches should be used for the\u00a0planting of street trees such as tree trenches and soil\u00a0cells.<\/li>\n<li>9Tree species with large canopies should be chosen to\u00a0create shade, to act as wind breaks, and to increase\u00a0the overall tree canopy for the neighbourhood. Trees\u00a0should be limbed up to provide 6-8 metres clearance\u00a0under the canopy for clear visibility and sight-lines\u00a0along the street and into the campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Streets are not just movement corridors.
