It supports the\u00a0development of a healthy and active environment by\u00a0designing spaces so that they can be used year round.\u00a0Designing for winter requires building flexibility into\u00a0design, to allow for changes in space usage as seasons\u00a0change. It plans for the use of the Campus as a winter\u00a0destination and playground for the University and\u00a0community after hours. It is also a way in which to build\u00a0identity with winter activities, and undertake designs that\u00a0are unique to the University.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_530\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 300px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/winter2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/winter2-300x174.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"174\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-530\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/winter2-300x174.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/winter2-180x104.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/winter2-250x145.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/winter2.jpg 598w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Precedent: Innovative outdoor uses<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Providing shelter, maximizing sunshine, and promoting\u00a0active living during the cold months can be achieved\u00a0through many creative strategies, both in the design of\u00a0the built form, as well as the design and organization of\u00a0the landscape and the elements within.<\/p>\n<h3>Policies:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Open spaces should be designed to maximize southern\u00a0exposure to take advantage of sunlight. The massing\u00a0and design of surrounding structures should maximize\u00a0sunlight penetration to these spaces.<\/li>\n<li>Open spaces should include mitigation measures from\u00a0wind, snow, and rain, such as trees, canopies from\u00a0buildings, and stand alone structures heated winter\u00a0huts, or art.<\/li>\n<li>Plant deciduous trees along the edges and in grouped\u00a0patterns within open spaces to act as wind breaks.\u00a0Evergreen trees should only be planted as windbreaks\u00a0in the forested landscaped open spaces and should not\u00a0block view corridors to and through spaces.<\/li>\n<li>Streets, sidewalks, and plazas or hard-surface spaces\u00a0should be designed for efficient snow clearance in\u00a0winter.<\/li>\n<li>Use collected snow from snow removal to create\u00a0toboggan hills and snow mounds for winter play and\u00a0to block winds.<\/li>\n<li>Consider the creation of ice rinks and other winter\u00a0sports and celebrations in larger public spaces such as\u00a0the field or the quad open spaces.\n<div id=\"attachment_531\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 300px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/winter3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/winter3-300x173.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-531\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/winter3-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/winter3-180x104.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/winter3-250x144.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/winter3.jpg 511w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Precedent: Open space with year-round uses<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n<li>Create year-round patios that are comfortable\u00a0throughout the seasons.
