These streets should\u00a0also be enhanced as attractive tree-lined corridors with\u00a0generous sidewalks and safe signalized pedestrian crossing\u00a0points to the Campus. They provide the opportunity\u00a0to make the Campus very accessible for all modes of\u00a0movement, and its edges welcoming for pedestrians and\u00a0present and attractive face to the surrounding city.<\/p>\n<h2>18th Street<\/h2>\n<p>18th Street is an existing highway adjacent to Brandon\u00a0University that functions as one of the main north-south\u00a0vehicular corridors in Brandon. As such, it is one of the\u00a0primary vehicular routes into and out of the Campus. It\u00a0also carries the main north-south public transit route to\u00a0and from Brandon University. 18th Street will continue\u00a0to be a barrier to the Campus in terms of providing safe\u00a0access unless the speed and profile of the street changes\u00a0between Princess Avenue and Victoria Avenue to be more\u00a0pedestrian friendly. To create a more pedestrian-friendly\u00a0environment for 18th Street, signalized pedestrian\u00a0crossings should be provided at Princess, Lorne and\u00a0Louise Avenues.<\/p>\n<h3>Policies:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Coordinate efforts with the City of Brandon to\u00a0enable a change to 18th Street to make it a safe and\u00a0accessible corridor. Including lowering the posted\u00a0traffic speed.<\/li>\n<li>The Louise Avenue and Princess Avenue lights at\u00a0the intersections should be coordinated to allow for\u00a0a mid-block signalized pedestrian crossing at Lorne\u00a0Avenue.<\/li>\n<li>The intersection treatments should be enhanced so\u00a0that they are highly visible and signify that they\u00a0are pedestrian priority crossing points. Treatments\u00a0can include patterning of the intersection, the use of\u00a0materials such as brick or stone, and integrated BU\u00a0gateway signage.<\/li>\n<li>Reduce the current 4.0m travel lanes to 3.5m to\u00a0encourage a reduction in speeds, to create wider\u00a0sidewalks, and for wider planting zones on either\u00a0side of the street and in the centre median.<\/li>\n<li>Plant streets trees on both sides of the street and in\u00a0the median to create a significant tree-lined canopy,\u00a0and to beautify the street so that the street becomes\u00a0part of defining a beautiful University District.<\/li>\n<li>Coordinate with the City of Brandon to integrate\u00a0any streetscape enhancements for 18th Street with\u00a0the Campus Master Plan\u2019s design for adjacent open\u00a0spaces.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Existing 18th Street Cross-Section:<\/h3>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/18thS1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/18thS1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1055\" height=\"554\" class=\"size-full wp-image-576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/18thS1.jpg 1055w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/18thS1-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/18thS1-768x403.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/18thS1-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/18thS1-180x95.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/18thS1-250x131.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/18thS1-640x336.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1055px) 100vw, 1055px\" \/><\/a>\n<h3>Proposed 18th Street Cross-Section:<\/h3>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/18thS2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/18thS2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1055\" height=\"554\" class=\"size-full wp-image-577\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/18thS2.jpg 1055w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/18thS2-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/18thS2-768x403.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/18thS2-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/18thS2-180x95.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/18thS2-250x131.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/18thS2-640x336.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1055px) 100vw, 1055px\" \/><\/a>\n<h3 class=\"mceTemp\">Elements of the 18th Street Right-of-Way<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>30.0m R.O.W.<\/li>\n<li>19.0m roadway, which includes two 3.5m travel\u00a0lanes in either direction and a 5.0m landscaped\u00a0centre median<\/li>\n<li>3.5m planted boulevard on either side of the street<\/li>\n<li>2.0m sidewalk on either side of the street<\/li>\n<li>5.0m centre median with street trees and\u00a0landscaping.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Victoria Avenue<\/h2>\n<p>Victoria Avenue does not experience the traffic volumes\u00a0of 18th Street, which may not necessitate a change to the\u00a0cross-section of the street, but it still requires a level of\u00a0enhancement to become more attractive and pedestrian-friendly,\u00a0including a consistent planting of street trees,\u00a0a minimum 2 metre wide sidewalk, and signalized\u00a0pedestrian connection to the Campus.<\/p>\n<h2>Princess Avenue<\/h2>\n<p>Princess Avenue is also an important street in the Plan\u00a0because it functions is a key connector linking the Campus\u00a0to both the surrounding neighbourhood, as well as to\u00a0downtown Brandon. It defines the northern edge of the\u00a0Campus and functions as a residential street with slower\u00a0moving traffic to allow for safe pedestrian crossing\u00a0between the Campus and community. It is also the location\u00a0of existing transit stops that service the University and\u00a0community. The forested nature of the adjacent Edge\u00a0Landscape should be enhanced to create a memorable\u00a0walking experience along this corridor and comfortable\u00a0waiting areas for transit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Victoria Avenue and 18th Street particularly, need to\u00a0function to better serve pedestrian movement and\u00a0connectivity to and from the campus.
