Brandon University\u00a0continues to embrace the opportunity to inclusively and\u00a0collaboratively engage with its Indigenous community\u00a0and aims to provide a strong sense of belonging and\u00a0identity within the Campus by various means. The\u00a0Campus Master Plan considers the following as key\u00a0guiding principles to this end. In addition, the Plan has\u00a0identified a series of Indigenous Placemaking Initiatives\u00a0that are infused in the Concept Plan Vision.<\/p>\n<h2>Design Principles<\/h2>\n<div class=\"new-column-box  1-DENOM count-1\">\n<h3>Foster an Indigenous sense of place.<\/h3>\n<p>The Campus\u00a0Master Plan Frameworks structures the design of the\u00a0physical campus to provide many opportunities for\u00a0Indigenous placemaking, and telling the Indigenous\u00a0story on campus.<\/p>\n<\/div><!-- .new-column-box -->\n<div class=\"new-column-box  1-DENOM count-2\">\n<h3>Commit to listening.<\/h3>\n<p>Through the campus planning\u00a0process and the implementation of the Campus\u00a0Master Plan, the voices of Indigenous people must be\u00a0heard and recognized.<\/p>\n<\/div><!-- .new-column-box -->\n<div class=\"new-column-box  1-DENOM count-3\">\n<h3>Build Indigenous identity.<\/h3>\n<p>Reflect an Indigenous face\u00a0to the community \u2014 at significant gateway points\u00a0on campus and throughout the Campus \u2014 through\u00a0building and open space design, as gateway and\u00a0wayfinding signage, through permanent or temporary\u00a0art, or integrated in furniture.<\/p>\n<\/div><!-- .new-column-box -->\n<div class=\"new-column-box  1-DENOM count-4\">\n<h3>Respect and enhance the land.<\/h3>\n<p>Upgrade existing open\u00a0spaces and streetscapes by increasing tree planting\u00a0and landscaping, incorporating sustainable design,\u00a0integrating water features, enhancing plant and\u00a0animal habitat, and planting food producing trees and\u00a0gardens on the Campus.<\/p>\n<\/div><!-- .new-column-box -->\n<div class=\"new-column-box  1-DENOM count-5\">\n<h3>Represent Indigenous culture and teaching.<\/h3>\n<p>This\u00a0could be done, among other things, through\u00a0dedication and design of spaces within the Campus\u00a0that nurture a curriculum and learning approaches\u00a0relevant to Indigenous epistemologies in respectful\u00a0research methodologies and ethics protocols. For\u00a0example, there are opportunities to teach and learn\u00a0about plant systems, animal habitat, food production,\u00a0and medicine, with places for ceremonial planting,\u00a0for ceremony and smudging, for cultural festivals and\u00a0activities.<\/p>\n<\/div><!-- .new-column-box -->\n<div class=\"new-column-box  1-DENOM count-6\">\n<h3>Recognize Indigenous history and cultural heritage.<\/h3>\n<p>All aspects of the Campus should commit to the\u00a0recognition of Indigenous peoples\u2019 traditional\u00a0territory and continued use of the land, while\u00a0identifying the Campus as being located within an\u00a0environment and place connected with Indigenous\u00a0peoples\u2019 history and communities, and home to many\u00a0Indigenous learners.<\/p>\n<\/div><!-- .new-column-box -->\n<div class=\"new-column-box  1-DENOM count-7\">\n<h3>Support Indigenous programming and student\u00a0life.<\/h3>\n<p>Continue to build welcoming and respectful\u00a0environments on the Campus through the\u00a0implementation of academic programs and spaces,\u00a0services, and support mechanisms dedicated to\u00a0Indigenous students. Recognize the importance of\u00a0sharing information within the institution and beyond\u00a0to inform current and prospective students of the\u00a0array of services, programs, and supports available to\u00a0them on the Campus.<\/p>\n<\/div><!-- .new-column-box -->\n<div class=\"new-column-box  1-DENOM count-8\">\n<h3>Support cross-cultural learning.<\/h3>\n<p>This should be done\u00a0by enabling resources, spaces, and approaches that\u00a0engage students, staff, and faculty in experiencing\u00a0Indigenous people\u2019s knowledge and cultural heritage\u00a0in holistic and respectful ways. Flexible design of the\u00a0physical campus can help create welcoming places\u00a0for all, and destinations on campus from which to\u00a0draw the outside interest. Recognize opportunities\u00a0for promotion, reclamation, restoration, revitalization,\u00a0and awareness of Indigenous languages throughout\u00a0the Campus.<\/p>\n<\/div><!-- .new-column-box -->\n<div class=\"new-column-box  1-DENOM count-9\">\n<h3>Support the wellbeing of Indigenous peoples as a\u00a0whole.<\/h3>\n<p>Support, promote, celebrate and record all\u00a0Indigenous initiatives at Brandon University, through\u00a0institutional platforms and the implementation of\u00a0Indigenizing initiatives dedicated to the wellbeing of\u00a0Indigenous peoples as a whole.<\/p>\n<\/div><!-- .new-column-box -->\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Indigenous Placemaking Initiatives<\/h2>\n<p>The Campus Master Plan Frameworks structures\u00a0the design of the physical campus to provide many\u00a0opportunities for Indigenous placemaking, and telling the\u00a0story of Indigenous peoples.
