The purchase of the Fleming\u00a0School Site is an opportunity to increase and diversify\u00a0student housing in close proximity to the campus. The\u00a0presence of the Faculty of Health Studies Psychiatric\u00a0Nursing Department on the Winnipeg Campus provides\u00a0an opportunity fill a needed service for the community\u00a0in the City of Winnipeg. The acquisition of the Brandon\u00a0University\u2019s Downtown Campus lands is intended\u00a0to revitalize the downtown core as well as increase\u00a0academic and community services and amenities for\u00a0the City of Brandon. The aspirations of the University\u00a0for all of its land holdings and satellite institutions, is\u00a0to create quality and attractive environments to benefit\u00a0the Brandon community and beyond, and to achieve its\u00a0strategic academic, social, environmental, and economic\u00a0goals and objectives.<\/p>\n<h2>BU Winnipeg campus<\/h2>\n<p>The University is currently initiating an expansion to the\u00a0Faculty of Health Studies Psychiatric Nursing Department.\u00a0A new learning laboratory is being added to the current\u00a0faculty space at an upper level in the building, which\u00a0allows for more wiggle room for current faculty and\u00a0staff uses. In the near future, the University needs to\u00a0explore opportunities to relocate the faculty in a location\u00a0on the Winnipeg Campus that will provide an attractive\u00a0quality learning environment in keeping with the\u00a0recommendation of the Campus Master Plan. This would\u00a0include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>bright, spacious learning spaces and lab spaces;<\/li>\n<li>a high level of building transparency and visual\u00a0relationships between the interior learning\u00a0environment and exterior open spaces; and,<\/li>\n<li>increased services and amenities such as a cafeteria,\u00a0meeting and collaboration space, social gathering\u00a0spaces, increased faculty office space.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Fleming School site<\/h2>\n<p>The Fleming School Site will be the location of new\u00a0family student housing for the University. The site is\u00a0within a five-minute walking distance from the Campus.\u00a0Connectivity and ease of access to the site is an important\u00a0factor in the Campus Master Plan. Consideration has\u00a0been given to creating a clear view corridor along\u00a0Louise Avenue to the Fleming School Site as well as\u00a0recommending the pedestrianization of Louise Avenue as a\u00a0connector through to the neighbourhood west.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The University should collaborate with the City to\u00a0provide wayfinding signage along Louise Avenue as\u00a0well as streetscape enhancements such as street tree\u00a0planting, and sidewalk improvements for ease of\u00a0walkability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>BU Downtown<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_644\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 300px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/downtown.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/downtown-300x286.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"286\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-644\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/downtown-300x286.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/downtown-180x172.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/downtown-250x239.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/campusplan\/files\/downtown.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">BU Downtown Concept Plan, DIALOG<\/p><\/div>\nBrandon University has embarked on a path to establish\u00a0a presence in the heart of Downtown Brandon. This will\u00a0entail the acquisition of properties to form a consolidated\u00a0parcel of nearly 70,000 square feet of land for future\u00a0development. The land parcels are located on the\u00a0100-block within the Downtown core, between Ninth\u00a0Street and 10th Street. This is an exciting development\u00a0that will be transformative for both the University, the\u00a0downtown area, and for the entire city. This new initiative\u00a0opens the door to a multitude of opportunities including:\u00a0advancing the University\u2019s Academic Plan; enabling the\u00a0implementation of the Campus Master Plan; and, meeting\u00a0student and senior housing needs. This initiative will\u00a0be catalytic for the future of downtown Brandon as it\u00a0represents one of the most significant developments for\u00a0the University and City in several decades.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, Brandon University announced that the\u00a0initiative to expand the University\u2019s footprint downtown\u00a0was approved by the City of Brandon and Renaissance\u00a0Brandon. This initiative was sparked by the generous\u00a0decision of Landmark Cinemas to make the former Strand\u00a0Theatre available to the University, bringing all interested\u00a0parties to the table to develop a collaborative vision for\u00a0downtown.<\/p>\n<h2>Serving the Community and Beyond<\/h2>\n<p>Brandon University has been serving the community\u00a0as a post-secondary institution for over 115 years,\u00a0providing education, amenities, and services. 2017 is\u00a0an important year, as the institution celebrates its 50th\u00a0year anniversary as a University. The initiative therefore\u00a0has happened at an opportune time, as it represents an\u00a0exciting new chapter in growth for the University that \u00a0together with the Campus Master Plan, will play a key\u00a0role in shaping a direction for the University over the\u00a0next 20-30 years. It is also an important initiative for the\u00a0City as the University will play a key role in revitalizing\u00a0Brandon\u2019s downtown. Working with the community,\u00a0through the development of the BU Downtown Plan, the\u00a0University will act as a catalyst for growth, innovation,\u00a0and revitalization.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, Brandon University\u2019s Downtown Campus will\u00a0meet some very specific needs of the University and its\u00a0community. It is intended to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create new uses and enhanced attractions to\u00a0revitalize and animate the downtown core and to\u00a0engage the community.<\/li>\n<li>Create new housing options to serve a diverse\u00a0population and to foster a critical mass.<\/li>\n<li>Create incentives for downtown business\u00a0development with new spaces for commercial\u00a0businesses, incubator uses, and public market\u00a0activities.<\/li>\n<li>Attract capital investment to the city and downtown.<\/li>\n<li>Address the gap in seniors and student affordable\u00a0housing.<\/li>\n<li>Diversify the academic options for the University\u00a0such as graduate and professional studies.<\/li>\n<li>Advance Brandon as a destination for arts and\u00a0culture, post-secondary education, and vibrant\u00a0downtown living.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brandon University has identified various opportunities\u00a0to grow its physical footprint to neighbouring or satellite\u00a0sites, to increase the opportunities for the University\u00a0and the wider community.
