The Faculty of Arts at the University of Manitoba invites applications from Indigenous (e.g., First Nations, Métis, Inuit) Scholars for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing Dec 1, 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The University of Manitoba campuses are located on original lands of Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene peoples, and on the homeland of the Métis Nation. The University also hosts the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. U of M is located in Winnipeg, the largest city in the province of Manitoba, and home to nearly 100,000 Indigenous people. The city has a rich cultural environment and a vibrant Indigenous community; and the region provides ample opportunities for outdoor recreation in all seasons. Manitoba is home to 63 First Nations, the Manitoba Metis Federation, and is over-all 18% Indigenous.  According to statistics Canada, 1 in seven Indigenous Canadians nationally lives in Manitoba.

For more than 40 years, the Department of Native Studies at University of Manitoba has been an international leader in the field, committed to providing an excellent and diverse education to its students, to expanding Indigenous knowledge through research, scholarship and creative activity, and to serving Native, Canadian and other communities through outreach and academic service. Currently the Department offers undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degrees (a 3-year General degree with dedicated streams in Anishinaabemwin and Cree language, a 4-year Advanced Major degree, and a unique Aboriginal Governance stream) and degrees at the Masters and PhD levels. We offer courses in Indigenous cultural and intellectual traditions, histories, politics, economic development, arts, literatures, racism, colonization and decolonization, representation, education, health, Indigenous languages, contemporary issues and many other topics surrounding Indigenous cultures and communities. The ideal candidate will have or will be close to completion of a Ph.D. in any area of Indigenous/Native Studies and Indigenous scholars from across the disciplinary and interdisciplinary spectrum are encouraged to apply. Candidates should have a commitment to working and researching collaboratively with Indigenous Peoples and communities, a record of developing research excellence, an interest in fostering and enhancing connections with Indigenous individuals and organizations, and some experience in teaching, course development and delivery. The successful candidate must also have excellent interpersonal skills, personal and academic integrity, and be a creative and energetic individual with a demonstrated interest in advancing Indigenous knowledge, critical theories, and research methods and methodologies.

The successful applicant will undertake undergraduate and graduate teaching duties, pursue an independently funded research program and engage in campus and community service activities including participation in the University of Manitoba’s Indigenous Achievement initiatives.
