The Faculty of Education, Simon Fraser University, seeks applications for a tenure-track position in Indigenous Education at the Assistant Professor rank beginning September 1, 2020.

Located on the traditional, unceded, and occupied territories of the Coast Salish peoples, SFU has campuses in Burnaby, Surrey, and Vancouver. Candidates must possess, or be on the verge of obtaining a doctoral degree in education and have substantial experience in public school teaching (K-12) and/or post-secondary expertise working with pre-service and in-service teachers. Candidates should be knowledgeable of and confident teaching critical issues of race and racism, identity, and systemic social inequalities in Aboriginal education. As well, candidates should have experience and expertise in advancing projects that address Indigenous educational needs in critical areas. Examples of such critical areas include decolonizing teacher education, language revitalization, Indigenous resurgence, and self-determination, Indigenous knowledges and traditions, which may include science and mathematics education; basic and advanced literacy. Candidates should provide evidence of their research or potential to develop a program of research in one or more such areas.

The successful candidate will be expected to help develop the Faculty's capacity to fulfill and surpass the Teacher Regulation Branch (TRB) mandate that requires every pre-service teacher in BC take a course or course equivalent pertaining to “First Nations pedagogy and issues related to the historical and current context of First Nations, Inuit and Métis learners,” as per Policy P5.C.03.1 of the TRB. This will require close collaboration with the large and diverse team of educators involved in the Faculty's Professional Development Program and the Indigenous Education Reconciliation Council (IERC), and Office of Indigenous Education. Familiarity and experience with methodologies of teacher-led inquiry will be an asset. They will have a demonstrated knowledge of and accomplishment in Indigenous Education, Indigenous research methodologies, interdisciplinary innovation, and community engagement. Ideally, they will have a demonstrable history of community involvement, and an Indigenous lived experience including working with First Nations, Inuit or Métis communities and organizations in North America/Turtle Island.
