Job Description: Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) is seeking motivated and innovative students to work in Canada’s Agriculture and Agri-Food sector.

The Student will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to:

• Prepare buffers and samples for molecular analysis
• DNA extraction, quantification, and dilution for downstream analysis.
• Perform molecular marker analysis using techniques such as but not limited to polymerase chain reaction, electrophoresis, and KASPar.
• Recording and analyzing data.
• Maintaining & updating daily logs of activities
• Basic laboratory duties such as autoclaving and additional duties as assigned by the laboratory supervisor.
• Preparing tubes, containers, labels and materials for collection of samples.
• Planting and sampling plant materials from growth chambers and greenhouses.
• Will participate in genetic mapping of high value trait in wheat and/or oat.

Hourly rates of pay: Current Rates of Pay as per Treasury Board Secretariat Student Rates of Pay.

Hours of work: Monday – Friday 8:00 to 4:00 – 37.5 hours per week/7.5 hours per day

Language Requirement: English Essential

Essential:

• Highly motivated with the ability to work independently
• Strong organization and time management skills
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Knowledge of molecular tools (thermocycler, centrifuge, etc.), and techniques (PCR based molecular markers)
• Ability to accurately gather data using biochemical tools (eg. spectrophotometer), and techniques (eg. chlorophyll measurements)

Assets:

• Experience with molecular tools (thermocycler, centrifuge etc), and techniques (PCR based molecular markers)

Work conditions:

Lab work involves to stand for part/most of working day, handle various chemicals and sharing the working space with other lab users. Field work involves working in harsh environments (outdoors, cold, hot, dust, rain and noise), including presence of irritants such as dust, pollen and spores, insects. May be required to perform physically demanding work activities including moderate to heavy manual labour requiring bending and lifting heavy objects (up to 10kg).

To be eligible for the Post-secondary Co-op/Internship Programs, you must:

• Have full-time student status by the academic institution in which you are presently enrolled;
• Be enrolled in a PSC approved Co-op/Internship program.
