Job Description:

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) is seeking motivated and innovative students to work in Canada’s Agriculture and Agri-Food sector. AAFC offers students positions at the Brandon Research and Development Centre providing valuable work experience through practical and meaningful employment.

The successful applicant will participate in:

  • Package seed for planting, participate in marking of plots in preparation for seeding
  • Collecting samples for pre-harvest sprouting according to the established protocols.
  • Counting germinated/sprouted seeds from wheat spikes
  • Harvesting plots, cleaning, weighing, determining protein/other quality traits
  • Data and sample collection according to protocols
  • Weed management and identification of weeds
  • Data entry into handheld and desktop computers
  • Maintaining & updating daily logs of activities
  • Hand harvesting of samples for dry matter, weighing and plant and soil samples
  • Collect soil, grain, whole plants
  • Performs dry matter determinations on plant and soil samples
  • Prepares soil and plant samples by grinding prior to laboratory analysis
  • Prepares bags, containers, labels and materials for collection of samples
  • Basic laboratory duties

Hourly rates of pay: Current Rates of Pay as per Treasury Board Secretariat Student Rates of Pay.

College Year 1: $13.69 University Year 1: $14.43
College Year 2: $15.40 University Year 2: $16.49
College Year 3: $17.31 University Year 3: $18.91
University Year 4: $20.19
University Year 5: $21.64

Hours of work: Monday – Friday 8:00 to 4:30 – 40 hours per week/8 hours per day

Language Requirement: English Essential

Essential

  • Highly motivated with the ability to work independently
  • Strong organization and time management skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills

Work conditions: Field, laboratory work, may involve some heavy lifting

To be eligible for the Post-secondary Co-op/Internship Programs, you must:

  • Have full-time student status by the academic institution in which you are presently enrolled;
  • Be enrolled in a PSC approved Co-op/Internship program.

Citizenship: Preference will be given to Canadian Citizens.

Reliability Security Clearance

  • Valid Provincial drivers licence
  • Ability to work outside in varying weather conditions
  • Must be able to walk, bend and stand for part/most of working day
  • Willingness and ability to travel to Research Plots if necessary

Please be aware that the Brandon Research Centre does not have public transportation access to the facilities nor housing accommodations (housing can be hard to find). You will be required to find a place to live in and transportation to the Centre.  You will be required to pay your own relocation.
