The Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) is the official democratic and self-governing representative for the Metis Nation’s Manitoba Metis Community. The Manitoba Metis are Canada’s Negotiating Partners in Confederation and the Founders of the Province of Manitoba.

The MMF seeks to fill one full-time term Community Engagement Specialist position within our Energy, Infrastructure, and Resource Management Department located in Churchill, MB. This term has an end date of March 31, 2022, with a possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Conservation Coordinator, the Community Engagement Specialist acts as a central point of contact in the north within the Department. The incumbent works with the Canadian Coast Guard, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and the MMF to build capacity within the Metis Government, identify regional Metis priorities, and create a better communication stream between all three parties.

Job Duties/Competencies:

  • Engage with the Manitoba Metis Community’s citizens and harvesters to better understand and represent their historical and contemporary resource use, cultural and heritage resource concerns, and conservation and ecological concerns;
  • Facilitate citizen involvement in project planning and decision-making in northern initiatives;
  • Coordinate work associated with the facilitation of meetings, community consultation sessions, teleconferences, etc.;
  • Analyze legislation and regulations, project descriptions, and assessment materials for potential impacts to Metis Citizens and their resource use;
  • Research and develop surveys and interview questions related to regional priorities;
  • Participate in research and monitoring projects in the greater Wapusk National Park ecosystem.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social or natural sciences or related discipline; a combination of education and experience will be considered;
  • Experience in research and/or program development;
  • Experience working with leadership and in community settings;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and time management skills;
  • Experience working with boards and/or committees is preferred;
  • Experience working for a not-for-profit organization and Indigenous community is an asset;
  • Knowledge of Metis culture, MMF programs and services is a definite asset;
  • Ability to travel and possess a valid Manitoba Driver’s license.
