The Brandon Bear Clan seeks term Community Outreach Worker (term until December 2021)

Reports To: Brandon Bear Clan Women’s Council

Effective Date: October 2020

Wage: $20.00 per hour

Hours: To be determined

The Bear Clan offers help, information, supplies and respect to all community members. The purpose of the Bear Clan is to help people and prevent the need for police and authority interventions. This is achieved in a non-violent, non-threatening and supportive manner primarily through relationship building and reconciliation.

Reporting to the HR Committee of the Brandon Bear Clan Women’s Council, the staff is responsible for supporting the Brandon Bear Clans activities and administrative duties. The person(s) should be passionate about supporting the goals of Brandon Bear Clan and be comfortable building relationships with our most vulnerable community members. The successful candidate must show compassion, understanding and acknowledge the importance of confidentiality.

Position Requirements:

  • Support volunteers and increase involvement via presentations and community outreach.
  • Expand current patrols from the downtown area to other locations in the community to increase BBCP monthly contacts.
  • Seek out organizations and businesses to do presentations about the BBCP.
  • Find and organize training opportunities for volunteers of the BBCP.
  • Track referrals and follow up interactions as part of reporting requirements.
  • Prepare and organize patrol materials
  • Maintain Public Health standards

Required Qualifications:

  • Public Speaking skills
  • Of legal age
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Evidence of ability to work effectively in a multi-task environment
  • Evidence of strong organizational skills
  • Must possess basic computer skills
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Awareness of issues surrounding addictions, homelessness, Mental Health
  • Understanding of harm reduction
  • The ability to perform their duties on a regular basis
  • Valid Manitoba Class 5 license and clean drivers abstract
  • Basic bookkeeping skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a team
  • Ability to set and achieve goals as directed by the Women’s Council
  • Knowledge of Bear Clan goals
  • Current First Aid and CPR

Assets:

  • Ability to speak an Indigenous Language
  • Experience working with vulnerable community members
  • Food Safe Certificate
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and/or A.S.I.S.T.

Administrative:

  • Track monthly statistics & submit to the Women’s Council
  • Complete reports as assigned
  • Make observations and keeps accurate records
  • Support volunteers
  • Create/Distribute communication material
  • Responsible for social media accounts in partnership with Women’s Council
  • Maintains up to date inventory of program materials
  • Maintain budgets
  • Keep track of hours worked and record attendance daily

Information and Communication:

  • Will be required to observe and function within the policies and procedures of Brandon Friendship Centre and The Brandon Bear Clan
  • Outreach with and share information to the community about Brandon Bear Clan
  • Presentations as requested
  • Note any communication with Women’s Council in reports
  • To answer inquiries and provide information to the community
  • Report directly to the Brandon Bear Clan Women’s Council any information, concerns and matters that have a bearing on the operation of Brandon Bear Clan
  • Participate in and arrange trainings for Bear Clan patrollers
  • Maintains files and required funding reports

Supervision:

  • Incumbent can work with minimal supervision following initial orientation and training period
  • Exercises a good deal of independent judgement in performance of duties
  • Ability to maintain healthy boundaries

Patrols:

  • Will prepare for (shop, prepare supplies, snacks, set up) and participate in weekly patrols
  • Will register new patrollers and complete necessary paperwork
  • Will work at increasing community involvement in patrols
  • Will work towards increasing number of patrols
  • Will accept donations and keep patrol den organized and tidy
  • Makes oneself aware of community concerns and follow up when appropriate

Note: A Criminal Record Check, Drivers Abstract, Adult Abuse and Child Abuse Registry Check must be submitted.
