As a member of the finance team, the Controller assists the CFO in directing the organization’s accounting functions. Contributes to the development and maintenance of financial reporting, planning, and budgeting systems. The Controller oversees the preparation of periodic reporting and required legal filings. Provides training and coaching to accounting staff. Coordinates audit paperwork for annual audits. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional areas of responsibility. Accountable to resolving escalated issues ensuring efforts result in successful coordination with other departments.

Position Duties & Responsibilities:

Support and supervision

  • Communicate and disseminate relevant information to end-users in a timely manner
  • Ensure an up to date chart of accounts with definitions for Agency-wide use is maintained
  • Ensure the completion of account reconciliations and analysis on a monthly basis for all balance sheet accounts and key revenue and expense accounts as under the responsibility of the accounting department
  • Prepare the financial statement package for the finance committee
  • Review bi-weekly and accrual payroll journal entries prior to posting to the accounting system
  • Review and approve accounts payable invoices, bill payments, EFT payments, and signing of cheques
  • Review and approve accounts receivable invoices and cash receipts
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly financial reporting to various funders and agencies
  • Prepare and record monthly recurring and adjusting journal entries as required
  • Maintain fixed asset sub-ledger posting of depreciation expense
  • Assist agency programs with inquiries on financial statements and funding
  • Prepare year-end documentation required for external auditors
  • Ensure billings are completed in a timely, clear, and accurate manner
  • Provide technical support and training for the Accounting/Payroll departments for the Accounting system
  • Coordinate and arrange vacation coverage support for accounting staff
  • Ensure the compliance and implementation of yearly audit recommendations
  • Assist with preparation of budget and forecasts
  • Oversee and manage the day to day accounting functions
  • Other duties as assigned by the CFO

Month & Year End Procedures

  • Responsible for month-end and year-end paperwork and processes
  • Year-end documentation required for external auditors
  • Act as a liaison with external auditors for efficient completion of audit activities
  • Responsible for year-end routines for close on Agency computerized accounting system

Other Duties

  • Research and develop templates to automate processes and reports for both Accounting and Payroll
  • Ensure the preparation of annual information returns for local, provincial, and federal agencies, including GST returns
  • Complete special projects and develop processes for new finance initiatives and reporting
  • Develop accounting procedures for special events
  • Work with program managers to develop custom financial reports
  • Provide training and guidance to program staff regarding completing finance reports
  • Assist CFO with program reporting to funders and special projects
  • Co-supervision of accounting and payroll team with the CFO

Qualifications:

Essential

  • Certificate in Accounting or Financial Management Accounting (accredited educational facility)
  • Enrollment in the CPA Professional Education Program
  • Have read the Truth & Reconciliation Commission of Canada Calls to Action
  • Demonstrated proficiency working with SAGE 300 (ACCPAC) software
  • Demonstrated proficiency working with Microsoft Excel at an advanced level
  • An understanding of Accounting Standards for Non-Profit Organizations (ASNPO), CICA handbook, and financial statements
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and competing priorities without compromising accuracy and deadlines
  • Supervisory experience
  • Minimum of five years related work experience on the full accounting cycle

Preferred

  • Undergraduate degree from a recognized university; CPA Designation;
  • Experience in Payworks application
  • Experience working for not-for-profit organizations
  • Experience with government financial requirements and liaison with government branches
  • Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture

Requirements:

  • Satisfactory Criminal, Child and Adult Abuse Registry and Prior Contact Check and a Driver’s Abstract

Salary Range: Depending on qualifications, per annum. MYS offers a competitive benefit package and pension plan.

Hours of Work: 35 hours per week, varied schedule.
