Location: Brandon, Manitoba

The Office of the Fire Commissioner (OFC) is a diverse organization responsible for fire and building safety, emergency response, fire investigations and various types of technical equipment inspections throughout the Province of Manitoba. The Fire and Life Safety Education section of the OFC aims to offer the most current information on fire safety awareness through public education initiatives, by teaching and advising members of the public, fire departments as well as municipalities in respect to these matters.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Municipal Support Officers with co-ordinating public education events
  • Assist with creating and updating risk assessments and business continuity plans
  • Participate in events that may have limited resources and/or limited public education exposure related to fire safety
  • Administrative duties including preparing meeting packages
  • Assist with updating documentation such as information pamphlets for different age ranges
  • Conduct research, perform analysis and input data when required
  • May assist with training fire service personnel regarding public education
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned

Desired Skills and Qualifications:

  • Education or experience related to emergency management, community planning, teaching, public speaking, marketing or administrative duties
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to make presentations to a broad audience including children, youth, adults and older adults
  • Experience in organizing, delivering and executing educational programs
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Proven computer skills, including experience with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel etc.)
  • Ability to work within a team setting as well as independently, with minimal supervision
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple competing priorities

Essential Requirements: Students must meet all essential criteria no later than the first day of employment to be eligible for these positions.

  • Enrolled at a recognized secondary or post-secondary institution, and returning to full time studies in the fall
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check, Child and Adult Abuse Record Checks
  • Satisfactory driver’s abstract and valid Manitoba Class 5 Drivers License
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends and travel throughout Manitoba
  • Physically capable of performing the duties and functions of the job including lifting heavy objects, kneeling, standing, climbing stairs/ladders, working at heights and operating vehicles over long distances
