Every year, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) hires students through Government of Canada student employment programs such as the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) and the Post-secondary Co-operative Education/Internship Program (Coop/Internship). Through the Lake Winnipeg Basin Program, ECCC will hire Indigenous students to support a variety of freshwater related activities in support of ECCC’s mandate. ECCC is looking to hire motivated students in a broad area of water-related disciplines for a number of positions responsible for water quality and/or quantity monitoring, data analysis, policy planning and program administration.

Environmental Monitoring Technologist - Water Quality Monitoring

Location: Winnipeg, MB (1 position)

Duration: Eight-month term with varying hours (very early and/or late evenings), all overtime is compensated.

• The candidate will collect and process water & biological samples and data throughout the Lake Winnipeg Basin, as well as offer operational support for aquatic science studies and reporting.
• Duties include: Travel to river, lake & wetland sites; sampling water, plankton & invertebrates; processing samples in the lab for chemical analysis; using and maintaining electronic water quality meters & other technical equipment; and data management.
• Required: Ability and willingness to work in adverse field conditions and remote locations.
• Asset Qualifications: Outdoor field experience; laboratory skills; and experience with trucks, boats or trailers.

Hydrometric Assistant - Water Quantity Monitoring

Location: Winnipeg, MB (1 position)

Duration: Four-month term

• The candidate will assist in fieldwork collecting water level and water quantity data throughout Southern Manitoba.
• Duties include: Fieldwork in potentially adverse conditions and weather, conducting level surveying, working in and near water, minor construction and assembly of equipment, using tools and power equipment, as well as working in a warehouse.
• Office duties include: Data collection and review, as well as completing reports.
• Asset Qualifications: Experience in hydrology and land surveying.

Policy, Planning and Support

Location: Winnipeg, MB (1 position)

Duration: Four-month term

• The candidate will provide policy and program administration support for the delivery of the Lake Winnipeg Basin Program as well as related freshwater activities.
• Duties include: Analyzing, reviewing, summarizing and reporting on regional water issues.

Water Quality, Hydrologic or Hydro-meteorological Data Analyst

Location: Regina, SK (preference), will consider other locations (Saskatoon, SK; Winnipeg, MB; Edmonton or Calgary, AB) - (1 position)

Duration: Four-month term

• The candidate will conduct statistical analysis on long-term water quality and hydrologic data sets.
• Duties include: Compiling, analyzing and summarizing water quality and hydrologic data.
• Required Qualification: Enrolment in a science, engineering, geography, statistics or mathematics-based field of study.
• Asset Qualifications: Experience in using statistical software (SysStat, SigmaPlot, etc.) and/or computer programming for engineering and science-based applications (e.g. R, MATLAB, etc.).

Essential Qualifications for all Positions:

• Knowledge of the role of Environment and Climate Change Canada related to freshwater water issues.
• Strong technical communication skills, ability to analyze and synthesize data.
• Experience with Microsoft-based programs (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint).
• Knowledge of water quality science and environmental issues.
• Required for fieldwork: Valid driver’s license and pre-employment medical.

Duration of Employment: Four or eight month term

Hours of work: Full time, 37.5 hours per week (unless otherwise noted)
