Duties:

Reporting to the Chair of the Contruction Trades department, the Instructor is required to deliver both the theoretical and practical aspects of Carpentry to apprentices and pre-employment students in the Carpentry and Woodworking program, including instruction into related trades. Topics covered will include, but are not limited to, trade safety, tools, machines and equipment, concrete, framing, stairs, finishing, blueprint reading, surveying, drafting and the Canadian Building Code. Duties include, but are not limited to: development and modification of curriculum, conduct student assessment and counseling, perform lab and classroom facility design and setup, maintain lab and classroom equipment and perform related administrative responsibilities as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Valid inter-provincial journeyperson's certificate in Carpentry
  • Significant related industry experience in the commercial and/or residential aspects of the trade
  • Experience using a variety of hand tools and machines
  • Experience reading blueprints
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Effective leadership skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as in small to large group settings
  • Ability to use conflict resolution techniques to facilitate positive outcomes
  • Ability to present material to diverse groups with the use of appropriate technology
  • Proficiency with MS Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)

Assets:

  • Certificate in Adult Education (CAE) or Technical Vocational Diploma
  • Post-secondary instructional experience
  • A network of contacts within industry

  • Instructors are required to complete a Certificate in Adult Education (CAE)
