As a Northern Water Smart® Instructor, you will deliver Water Smart® Public Education programs, Swim to Survive™ lessons, first aid, and boating safety courses in rural and remote communities across Manitoba. You will travel and experience Manitoba as few others have, and will work with various cultures and in unique conditions.

The Society anticipates hiring up to ten (10) instructors for the 2021 season. All positions are subject to funding availability, and we will continue to accept applications until all positions are filled.

Time Commitment & Working Conditions:

  • Regular travel to rural and remote communities will be required;
  • Most work occurs in a clean and comfortable environment, but there may be times where work will take place in locations that are more unstable and/or unpredictable;
  • Work may involve irregular hours, including weekends and holidays;
  • 12 to 18 week term between May 3 and September 3, 2021
  • Work from our Winnipeg office and participate in day trips in May and June;
  • Travel Monday to Friday during July and August to communities across Manitoba.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Helping to organize and deliver many Water Smart® initiatives, including EAL safety presentations, Farm Safety Days, and other public education events;
  • Travelling to rural and remote locations in Manitoba, including many Indigenous communities, to teach Lifesaving Society programs, including Swim to Survive™, Boat Operator Accredited Training™, and First Aid & CPR;
  • Submitting weekly reports and administrative paperwork to the Water Smart® Coordinator.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • Valid Class 5 (Full) Manitoba driver’s license (or equivalent);
  • Current National Lifeguard and Standard First Aid & CPR-C certifications;
  • Current Lifesaving Society – Swim for Life® Instructor and Lifesaving & First Aid Instructor certifications;
  • Previous experience as a swimming/lifesaving instructor;
  • Ability and willingness to work with various cultures;
  • Ability and willingness to travel to rural and remote locations by air, boat, bus, car, or rail;
  • Criminal Record and Child Abuse/Vulnerable Persons Registry checks.

Asset Qualifications & Skills:

  • Lifesaving Society – National Lifeguard Instructor certification;
  • Lifesaving Society – Trainer appointment (any stream);
  • Previous experience travelling to rural or remote locations in Manitoba;
  • Previous experience working with diverse cultures and groups;
  • Fluency in a second language, especially a North American Indigenous language.

Training Provided:

  • Earn your Pleasure Craft Operator Card & become a Lifesaving Society B.O.A.T. Instructor;
  • Recertify many of your certifications & learn about Lifesaving Society Water Smart® programming.

Wages & Benefits:

  • Seasonal salary of between $9,000 and $14,000 and coverage of travel costs;
  • Amazing experience and accomplishment for future resumes or references.

No relocation package is available for this position.
