Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare permits, designs, documentation, and record keeping of network infrastructure builds, rebuilds, rehabilitation projects etc. utilizing Computer Aided Design (CAD) software
  • Incorporate industry standards and best practices into Planning & Design operations
  • Develop and update construction, optical network design, and RF network standards and best practices
  • Maintain an organized repository of documentation on day-to-day operations
  • Develop outside network route designs using underground and aerial methods as appropriate to complete network expansions, rebuilds, or repairs
  • Meet with external contacts to discuss project scope and strategies; conduct field surveys and attend site meetings
  • Create site in detail (SID) plans for commercial buildings and private property
  • Develop project-specific construction notes, bill of material (BOM) requirements and identify associated labour tasks
  • Obtain all easements, support structures, permits and approvals
  • Maintain as-built records and distribute as required; input project as-built information and update maps and databases
  • Design both RF and optical networks using best practices and approved specifications
  • Supply design documentation to internal and external stakeholders as required
  • Incorporate as-built information from construction into RF and Optical designs, splice drawings, and other associated material and make available to internal stakeholders as required
  • Identify and recommend changes to improve performance, security, and reliability
  • Plan and coordinate all changes to systems and services according to established change management procedures
  • Review and coordinate on approved changes requests submitted by other departments
  • Assist with locates and the identification of outside plant, to assist other contractor/construction, and/or development organizations/persons
  • Report on weekly activity showing progress on tasks, and major projects
  • Attend and contribute to team meetings
  • Maintain status for all active projects and activities in a project management system
  • Provide feedback and support to enhance departmental goals and processes
  • Liaise with corporate partners such as MB Hydro (electric and gas), BellMTS, developers, etc in furthering the goals and objectives of WCG and Planning & Design

Qualifications:

  • One year underground and aerial construction experience
  • One year of RF and optical systems design experience
  • Advanced knowledge of AutoCAD
  • Experience/Knowledge of outside plant cable system design and drafting, HFC and FTTx, fibre optic technology, RF signal, Lode Data design software and GIS survey tools
  • Understanding of cable/fiber routing within a premise
  • Recognition of network synergies and consolidating designs to reduce project costs
  • Familiarity with ROW (Right-of-way) municipal consent application drawings, letters, and process, as well as CSA and utility standards
  • Ability to interpret technical material and plans
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electrical power, power distribution, power protection, and applicable code and industry practices
  • General understanding of broadband, telecom, cable networks and internet is an asset
  • Familiarity with the operation of coaxial networks, as operated by Cable Operators, along with fiber network design principle are key in this position as designs must match operational needs which do evolve over time
  • Minimum Grade 12 education: 2-year Engineering Technology course or equivalent industry experience preferred
  • Post-secondary education in Architectural Technology, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Telecommunications Program with strong focus on design/drafting preferred
  • Strong command of the English language, both spoken and written
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to clearly communicate with internal and external project teams
  • Detail-oriented with solid problem solving and analytical skills
  • Multi-tasking ability; adaptable to changing priorities and deadlines
  • Self-motivated with the ability to take initiative and resolve problems independently; monitors own quality of work
  • Ability to hold and maintain a valid driver's license; bondable
