Psychiatric Nurse

Hours: 40 hour/week

Reports To: Executive Director

Position Summary:

Working as a key member of the OASIS Outreach Team, the Psychiatric Nurse will connect individuals who use substances with specialized mental health and addiction treatment options.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conducts a mental health assessment with each participant, screening for symptoms of mental illness, reviewing medications and diagnoses, and identifying priorities and goals for mental health care.
  • Attends to basic medical needs including injuries, first aid, possible overdoses, wound dressings and other as needed
  • Facilitate linkages to psychiatry and counselling services as required.
  • Navigate various health systems including RAAM, AFM and other treatment options
  • Providing follow-ups to ensure participants have received adequate supports.
  • Work collaboratively with all members of the SBSL Team to conduct outreach in the community, focussing on those who are most vulnerable – those living in encampments, sleeping in bus shacks, ATM vestibules and public spaces.
  • Direct outreach will occur in identified “hot spot” areas in the SBSL catchment area at times when individuals are most likely to be found (early morning and evenings).
  • Respond to 911 calls as may be required, work with members of Winnipeg EMS
  • Continue support and engage SBSL Clinical Team to assist with transition from homeless to housing. This is important as the Clinical Team will be able to assess the type and level of wrap around services required to house and to improve housing retention.  The Clinical Team will create care plans to address addiction and mental health challenges and will case manage longer-term.
  • Maintain complete records that include specific reporting data, daily activity logs, mileage logs and other reports as directed.
  • Establish and maintain positive, productive working relationships with health providers, shelter programs, police (and other local officials), and other providers of services and resources to the people living homeless.
  • Attend daily Team Meetings, case conferences and community meetings as needed.
  • Other tasks as may be assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • Works effectively with people of varying racial, ethnic, cultural, educational and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Must be registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN)
  • Is proficient with computers and related technology; must maintain program related data- tracking systems, including case notes.
  • Maintains a non-judgmental attitude and a display of unconditional positive regard, is caring and compassionate.
  • Displays appropriate, professional, healthy boundaries and exercises mature judgment and understanding of safety concerns.
  • Completes tasks in a timely and efficient manner, utilizing good organizational skills.
  • Has the ability to manage multiple cases efficiently and effectively.
  • Adapts well to changing priorities and challenging individuals.
  • Effectively works within a team and successfully motivates others.
  • Maintains personal and professional integrity, and handles confidential information with discretion.
  • Desires to grow in knowledge of homeless services and resources.
  • Possesses a valid driver’s license, proof of a clean driving record.
  • Is able to work flexible hours.
  • Is familiar with Harm Reduction and Housing First models of service delivery.

Accountability and Review:

3-month probationary period with a performance review.
