CAMP HEALTH, HOPE & HAPPINESS (Camp He Ho Ha) 

Camp Health, Hope & Happiness is Alberta’s leading summer recreational facility for individuals with mental and physical disabilities. We are a residential camp where campers and staff are on site 24/7 during their 6-day stay.

How will I learn that? 

Each day you will provide mentorship for a 3rd year Registered Nursing student. You will be responsible for the administration of medications, applications and personal care, Medical Center functioning, and first aide when required. As a Nurse, you will act as a medical resource to other staff. You will be responsible for participation in the Nurse orientation and staff orientation.  

This may be the most challenging and rewarding job that you may ever experience. Your heart will open to people that you have only just met, you will create friendships with campers and staff that will extend years into the future, and you will be forever changed.

The term of employment is from May 11th to August 19th, 2023. 

Mandatory training runs from May 11th to 21st, 2023.

Qualifications 

  • Minimum of 18 years of age 
  • Registered with CARNA by the date of employment.
  • Clear Criminal Clearance and Vulnerable Sector Check 
  • Available May 11-21, 2023 to participate in mandatory nurse and summer staff orientation at Camp He Ho Ha 
  • Available to work all dates as shown in "Summer Camp Employment Schedule" (Exceptions must be discussed at time of interview, emergency exemptions apply)

Salary: $20,150.00 (before taxes) for the term of employment

  • Meals will be provided during camp days.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Abide by the Camp Philosophy that “Campers Come First”. 
  • Control, document, and administer all prescription medications to campers.
  • At his/her judgment, administer PRN medications.
  • In case of medication errors, the nurse must immediately complete an incident report and submit it to one of the Camp Coordinators.  They must also complete any follow-up phone conversations deemed necessary after consulting with Camp Coordinators. 
  • One nurse must be on site at all times.
  • Keep notes of PRN medications given, the date and the time and any action taken in care of camper and staff in the nurse notebook; this is a legal requirement.
  • Decide if further medical attention is required; (ie. trip to the hospital or a call to the personal physician, etc.) and ensure that this is carried out.  This includes transporting patient to facility or calling an ambulance.
  • Suppositories, changing of catheters, and colostomies are to be done by nurses.
  • Do periodic checks for personal care and activities of daily living.
  • Provide information on camper care to staff (i.e. specific care of colostomies, catheters, braces, behaviours, etc.) 
  • Administer first aide promptly when required.
  • Assist campers with any physio exercises that they may have to do while at camp.
  • Provide 1:1 camper attention when and where required (ie: sickness, etc.)
  • Facilitate the personal care sessions during the summer staff orientation.
  • Assist in activities in cabins and in specialty areas when additional help is required (ie. swimming, climbing wall, etc.)
  • Prepare first aid kits for pool, waterfront, climbing wall, arts and crafts, Medical center, kitchen, barge, cabins, and the office.
  • Maintain an inventory of medical supplies and replenish first aid after every camp.
  • Keep the Medical center clean and orderly.
  • Provide prompt feedback to parents, group homes, hospital care facility, etc. of camper health problems, accidents, or other pertinent information after consultation with the Camp Coordinators or Executive Director.
  • Ensure wheelchairs, commodes and bed rails are returned to the Medical center basement at the end of the camping season.
  • Facilitate sessions during orientation.
