An eligibility list may be created for similar positions and will remain in effect for 12 months. Work schedule is a five-day workweek that includes Saturdays and Sundays for visitor centre hours and public
programming, with regular days off mid-week. Some evening shifts are required for programming, especially during the summer season.

Introduction

Manitoba Parks is seeking a qualified individual to fill the position of Senior Park Interpreter at Spruce Woods Provincial Park. This dynamic position develops and delivers programs that enhance visitors’ experiences and inspires stewardship of the parks’ natural features, culture and history. Programming includes operating the park visitor centre, guided experiences, illustrated talks, roving trailheads and recreation areas, school programs, and virtual programs/webinars.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must possess and maintain a valid full stage Manitoba Class 5 Driver's License
  • Must be willing and able to work evenings, statutory holidays and shift work
  • Must be willing and able to travel with occasional overnight accommodations
  • Must be willing and physically able to perform the duties of the position including working in various types of outdoor conditions, hiking trails, and lifting and moving items
  • Ability to work weekends is required - days off will be during the week day

Qualifications:
Essential:

  • Completed post-secondary education in a related field such as natural sciences, natural resources management, education, Indigenous studies, history, recreation/tourism. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
  • Experience developing and delivering interpretive programs at a natural, cultural or historical site, such as a park or museum.
  • Strong verbal communication skills with experience conducting public presentations to a variety of audiences.
  • Effective written skills with experience preparing thematic and inspirational interpretive program outlines, and writing program evaluations and reports.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships in a team setting, and with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize changing workloads and demands, working independently under minimal supervision.
  • Supervisory experience including providing training to staff.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations for visitors in Manitoba’s provincial parks.
  • Knowledge of the natural, cultural and historical resources in Manitoba’s provincial parks.

Desired:

Experience developing interpretive media content such as signs, exhibits, publications or digital content.
Ability to verbally communicate in French.

Duties:
The Senior Park Interpreter develops and delivers interpretive programs year-round, builds partnerships for programming, trains and supervises seasonal interpreters and volunteers at Spruce Woods, takes a leadership role to mentor and coach seasonal interpreters in other provincial parks, and assists with park resource management.
