An active research program allows our students to participate in national and international projects, and provides a wonderful dimension to their education that is generally not possible for undergraduate students at larger universities. The Geology faculty aren’t just academics and researchers, they also bring many years of applied national and international experience working for industry and government organizations, from Arctic Canada to West Africa, Western Europe to Southeastern Asia, Australia to the Southwestern United States, and from Central to South America. This greatly enhances the learning and career opportunities for our geology students, who are excellently positioned to make a major positive contribution as professional geoscientists, geoscience educators and researchers of tomorrow. Geology is a global science, and Canadian geologists are in demand worldwide.

Geoscience and Canada

Tyndall Stone

BU Campus Geology

Special Features

The Geology Department, in conjunction with alumni, the petroleum and mining industries, and appropriate government departments, operates a successful co-op work experience program for geology students.

The four-year degree program provides the academic requirements to become a registered Professional Geoscientist.

Professional Registration in Canada

The Brandon University Micro Analytical Facility now offers services for the newly operational JEOL JSM-6390LV/GS Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) equipped with an Oxford Instruments INCA x-act Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS) X-ray detector as well as high quality analytical and imaging packages.

Sample of Available Courses

Physical Geology

Historical Geology

Earth’s Energy Resources

Earth’s Mineral Resources

Environmental Geology

Work Experience in Geology

Mineral Deposits

Approximate Costs per year

Domestic Student Tuition and Fees: $6,171 (30 credit hours; full course load)

International Student Tuition and Fees: $19,770 (30 credit hours; full course load)

Text Books: $1,500

https://www.brandonu.ca/future-students/tuition/

Possible Careers

Critical Minerals Exploration (low carbon future, green economy)*

Environmental Geologist

Mining and Petroleum Industries

Government Geological Surveys

Teaching and/or Research

Professional Consulting

* Canada’s Critical Minerals List 2021

The Canadian Minerals and Metals Plan (2020)

The Canadian Minerals and Metals Plan – Update to Action Plan (2020)

See the Geology Job Sites page

Salary Information

Nine salary surveys are given in the Salary Surveys page. These cover provincial, national, and international career options. Click the links to get more details. All show very robust and competitive salaries. Additional information in Other Links to Geologist Salaries.

BU Geology – Brochure The Geology program at Brandon University offers many exciting opportunities for undergraduate students.
