Many of these are simple as rebooting your computer occasionally or installing a program and allowing it to run a scan.<\/p>\n<p>Step 1: Scan for and Remove any infections:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Virus Removal &amp; Prevention\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/helpdesk\/virus-removal-prevention\/\">Virus Removal Guide<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Spyware Removal from your Computer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/helpdesk\/spyware-removal-from-your-computer\/\">Spyware Removal Guide<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Step 2: Remove Unnecessary Programs<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Uninstall any programs that <strong>you know<\/strong> aren&#8217;t needed. Such as old versions of programs you no longer require. If you aren&#8217;t sure what a certain program is for, then it is best to look it up online, or not remove it.<\/li>\n<li>Remove temporary virus scan tools that sometimes automatically install with web browsers. E.g. Norton security tool, McAfee security scan.<\/li>\n<li>Remove any toolbars that you don&#8217;t actually use. E.g. MSN toolbar, Yahoo toolbar, Ask toolbar, babylon toolbar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Step 3: Install Windows Updates<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Install Windows updates. Reboot your computer if required.<\/li>\n<li>When updates complete, then check for more updates.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat until no updates are left to install.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Step 4: Update any other programs that you can. Adobe Reader\/Acrobat updates, Firefox, Adobe Flash player, etc.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Often these programs notify you that there are updates available, or you can just open the program, look under the help menu and select &#8220;Check for update&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Step 5: Run a clean up utility:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Download and install the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.piriform.com\/ccleaner\">cCleaner<\/a> program (follow license requirements to determine the version)\n<ul>\n<li>Use the default settings except: deselect cookies, history, recently typed urls, recent documents, and Taskbar Jump lists.<\/li>\n<li>Then click applications tab, and deselect anything you wish to save. Such as Firefox internet history or MS office document history.<\/li>\n<li>Click &#8220;Run Cleaner&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Run the ccleaner registry cleanup.\n<ul>\n<li>Click Registry on the left side,<\/li>\n<li>Choose everything except missing Shared Dll, and Active X Issues<\/li>\n<li>Click the scan for Issues button<\/li>\n<li>Click Fix Selected Issues (you can make a backup file when it prompts you, or skip it)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Download and Run <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crystalidea.com\/speedyfox\">SpeedyFox<\/a> (http:\/\/www.crystalidea.com\/speedyfox)\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure to close your programs it lists before clicking the optimize button.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Step 6: Perform Windows Disk Cleanup:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Run Disk Cleanup (found under Start\/all programs\/accessories\/system tools)\n<ul>\n<li>Select Drive C:<\/li>\n<li>wait for the analysis to complete<\/li>\n<li>select &#8220;cleanup system files&#8221; (if that option is available) and let it analyze further<\/li>\n<li>put a checkmark beside temporary files, dump files, windows updates, log files, internet files.<\/li>\n<li>click ok, let the cleanup finish<\/li>\n<li>reboot your computer and let the windows update cleanup complete<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Step 7: Defragment your hard drive:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Run Disk Defragmenter (all programs\/accessories\/system tools)\n<ul>\n<li>Choose analyze to see how fragmented your drive is. (over 10% is bad)<\/li>\n<li>Click Defrag to fix the fragmentation.<\/li>\n<li>Check the schedule to have it defrag itself regularly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Step 8: Perform a disc check:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Follow the steps listed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ne8iFnoE86s\">here<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are several ways to improve the performance of your computer.
