Conduct literature review, organize and facilitate community meetings to build research partnerships, assist with design of research instruments, writing up, organizing, and interpreting interview data, and other related duties as assigned.


Across Canada, men report lower levels of stress and depression and, paradoxically, much higher rates of suicide. In general, men are less likely to talk about, and seek support for, mental and emotional distress than women and this is particularly the case in rural Canada. Dr. Herron, Dr. Allan, Prof. Waddell (Brandon University) and Dr. Rogers (University of Manitoba) are working on a two year project funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada to better understand and respond to the mental health needs of rural men. The project will generate knowledge about the diversity of rural men’s perceptions, experiences, and expressions of mental health and wellness; explore the potential of digital and visual methods (e.g., tablet-based journals) to open up conversations about everyday experiences of mental health and wellness; and mobilize digital and visual knowledge that resonates with diverse groups to create more inclusive community and public health resources to reach more rural men.


This is an excellent opportunity for students to acquire advanced training in qualitative, community-based, interdisciplinary research.


  • Must have a GPA of 3.70 or higher
  • Must have background in social sciences and/or health studies
  • Must have experience in qualitative research methods
  • Must have an interest in working in rural communities and community organizations
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills
