Across Canada, men report lower levels of stress and depression and, paradoxically, much higher rates of suicide. In general, men are less likely to talk about, and seek support for, mental and emotional distress than women and this is particularly the case in rural Canada. Dr. Herron, Dr. Allan, Prof. Waddell (Brandon University) and Dr. Rogers (University of Manitoba) are working on a two year project funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada to better understand and respond to the mental health needs of rural men. The project will generate knowledge about the diversity of rural men’s perceptions, experiences, and expressions of mental health and wellness with the aim of creating more inclusive community and public health resources to reach more rural men.
