2025 Spring/Summer, Course-Based Contract Opportunities, B.A/B.Ed.- PENT Indigenous Teacher Education
PENT is seeking qualified, Contract Academic Staff to teach the following three credit hour courses during the Spring/Summer session of 2025. The instructors will be responsible for content delivery with expectations consistent with offerings of this course within the appropriate department. Qualified candidates must possess strong teaching, communication and organizational skills, and demonstrate evidence of teaching effectiveness.
02.342 Foundations of Literacy – June 30 – July 24 – 1:30 – 4:00 PM – Monday to Thursday
This course explores theories of English literacy development and teaching methods for students of varying ability across grade levels.
02.381 Teaching Indigenous Studies – June 30 – July 24 – 1:30 – 4:00 PM – Monday to Thursday
This course will assist teachers in integrating Indigenous studies into various subject areas in the school curriculum and in teaching separate courses in Indigenous studies where this is included in the course of studies. Consideration will be given to the place of Indigenous studies for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. It will include examination of the importance of relevant and accurate materials for the development of self-concept. Techniques of developing materials for or adapting existing materials to local communities will be included. History, local histories, aboriginal organization and government will be introduced. Materials will be examined for reading levels, content and suitability for various age groups.
02.459 ELA Methods (MY) – April 7 – May 1 – 5:00 – 7:30 PM – Monday to Thursday
This course is an introduction to the methods, materials, and rationale for English Language Arts in the Middle Years classroom. It covers the development of literacy, the influence of outside school experiences on language acquisition and development, the role of linguistics, the inter-relationship of the six areas of English Language Arts, organization and development of an effective educational experience for young adolescents and an overview of useful teaching practices and methodology ranging from direct instruction to whole language.
02.477 Social Studies Methods (MY) -June 30 – July 24 – 9:00 – 11:30 AM – Monday to Thursday
Social Studies has a mandate to prepare young people for active and responsible citizenship. This course will examine the Social Studies from grades five to eight. Both the content of the curriculum and the anticipated student response to it will be considered. Activities to promote a growth of appreciation for Social Studies will be emphasized.
03.351 Instructional Methods – April 7 – May 1 – 5:00 – 7:30 PM – Monday to Thursday
This is an introductory methods course designed to develop the skills and strategies used to teach all subjects in the Early and Middle years. It includes the application of writing objectives, questioning strategies, and reaching closure to both lessons and units of instruction. The practical application of instructional methods to classroom situations will be an integral part of the course.
04.366 History of Canadian Ed – April 7 – May 1 – 5:00 – 7:30 PM – Monday to Thursday
An historical analysis of the development of education in Canada. While the course will focus principally on developments after Confederation, the importance of the historical roots in Canadian education in Pre-Confederation Canada will also be examined.
Qualifications: Applicants should hold a minimum of a Master’s degree in an area related to the topic of instruction. Applicants may seek to establish an experiential/traditional equivalency to the Master’s degree and are invited to contact the Chair of the Selection Committee at the address below on how to establish equivalent academic or professional credentials.
Salary: $6901/3 credit hour course
