{"id":25,"date":"2011-02-15T16:40:07","date_gmt":"2011-02-15T22:40:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/languages\/"},"modified":"2024-04-24T14:31:04","modified_gmt":"2024-04-24T19:31:04","slug":"programs","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/languages\/programs\/","title":{"rendered":"Programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>COURSES ORGANIZATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The BU French and Francophone Studies Program is organized in three concentrations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Language Studies Concentration<\/li>\n<li>French and Francophone Studies Concentration<\/li>\n<li>Theoretical Concentration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please consult the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/calendar\/\">Course Calendar<\/a>\u00a0to see full course listings and descriptions.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><strong>PROGRAM STRUCTURE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With a\u00a0<strong>minor concentration (3 or 4 years)<\/strong>, students will acquire the skills to communicate in French and develop a knowledge of French and Francophone cultures.<\/p>\n<p>With a\u00a0<strong>major concentration (3 or 4 years)<\/strong>, students will not only immerse themselves in a comprehensive program in higher learning, but they will also be able to choose various courses that will satisfy their interests.<\/p>\n<p>With one of the two\u00a0<strong>Certificates in French Language Proficiency<\/strong> (CFLP I and II),\u00a0students will obtain the necessary practical and theoretical language skills to become efficient speakers and writers of French in their personal and professional lives.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>CFLP I<\/strong>\u00a0is intended for students with limited or no previous knowledge of French, while the\u00a0<strong>CFLP II<\/strong>\u00a0pathway is designed for students who have acquired high school French.<\/p>\n<p>Accordingly, the <strong>CFLP I <\/strong>is ideal for the beginning French learner. In contrast, the <strong>CFLP II<\/strong> will equip learners with a solid base of grammatical structures and oral communication skills for everyday workplace use. These certificates may be completed as a stand-alone program or as part of an undergraduate degree at BU.<\/p>\n<p>Check out our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/languages\/files\/2023\/09\/Certificates-in-French-Language-Proficiency_Detailed-poster_Page_1.png\">brochure 1<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/languages\/files\/2023\/09\/Certificates-in-French-Language-Proficiency_Detailed-poster_Page_2-1.png\">brochure 2<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>INDIGENOUS LANGUAGES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Languages Department, in conjunction with the Department of Native Studies, is interested in the survival of Aboriginal languages in the Province.<\/p>\n<p>Classes are available in the Cree, Ojibway, and Dakota languages native to the Province of Manitoba. These courses are part of the Native Studies major available at Brandon University.<\/p>\n<p>Please consult the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/calendar\/\">Course Calendar<\/a>\u00a0to see full course listings and descriptions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OTHER LANGUAGES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Courses at the beginner and intermediate level are offered, depending upon demand and the availability of instructors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spanish<\/li>\n<li>Latin<\/li>\n<li>Hebrew<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT &amp; RECOGNITION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Brandon University\u2019s <strong>Prior Learning Assessment &amp; Recognition<\/strong> (PLAR) program allows students who have gained university-level knowledge and skills through a personal endeavor or work experience to apply for academic credit. The program also allows students to apply for academic credit for non-formal learning attained through the completion of courses or certificates offered, for example, by professional associations, organizations, or government agencies.<\/p>\n<p>Students who have completed French language studies or attained French language proficiency may be eligible to receive PLAR credit to achieve a Brandon University degree program or a Certificate in French Language Proficiency.
